Overview
So, you want to play in the hyper-roadster league without breaking the bank on a race machine disguised as a street bike? Suzuki has an answer, and it's called the GSX-S 1000 Race Edition. Imagine this: you take the heart of a GSX-R 1000, that legendary inline four-cylinder, and slip it into a more civilized frame. The result? A beast with 154 horsepower at 11,000 rpm and a torque of 104.9 Nm just waiting for a twist of the throttle to awaken. It’s not the insane power of a BMW S 1000 R or an Aprilia Tuono V4, but that’s precisely where its charm lies: exploitable power, an engine that growls without overwhelming you from the first corner. With a weight of 213 kg fully fueled, it’s not the lightest in its class, but its perimeter aluminum frame offers agility that makes you forget the weight.

This special edition, tweaked by the workshops of SERT, the legendary endurance team, mainly plays the appearance card. It's an assumed eye-catcher: a sporty blue accented with gold, bright red Brembo calipers, SERT logos everywhere, and a two-tone seat. It's marketing, certainly, but it works. The bike has a look, it’s striking. It looks furiously like last year’s “World Champion” edition, but it doesn’t matter, the passerby won’t notice the difference. The equipment follows suit with a windscreen, GB Racing engine protectors, and, above all, a titanium and carbon Akrapovic silencer. The latter is far from insignificant: it shaves off 1 kg from the scale and releases an additional 2.6 horsepower, bringing the total to 154. A subtle modification but one that gives the engine a more raspy voice and a more assertive character.
Who is this Suzuki for? Not for a beginner, obviously. Its 154 horsepower and lively temperament are destined for the experienced rider looking for a nervous roadster, without the extreme electronics and the prohibitive price of an Austrian or German rival. The riding position, with a seat at 810 mm, is engaging but not too radical, a good compromise for the city and winding roads. The braking, with its 310 mm Brembo discs at the front, inspires confidence, even if the weight remains a factor to manage during powerful cornering. At 250 km/h top speed, it has margin, and its 19-liter tank promises beautiful getaways.
The problem is the price. At 16,599 euros, it’s 3,500 euros more than the standard version. That’s a significant supplement for a decoration and an Akrapovic, even if the “Welcome Pack” with SERT t-shirt and cap is included. One is entitled to wonder if the SERT’s competition spirit is truly transcribed, or if it’s just a marketing makeover. The 2013 GSX-R 1000 SERT replica, on the other hand, had a much more authentic aura. The GSX-S 1000 Race Edition remains an excellent motorcycle, a powerful and well-equipped roadster, but its special edition speaks more to the wallet and the ego than to the soul of a true track rider.
