Overview
We often hear about returning to the future, but Suzuki chose to rewrite history. In 2018, while 1000cc superbikes are fueled by electronics and wings, the brand from Hamamatsu pulled off a brilliant move: dressing its fiercest GSX-R 1000 R in the iconic livery of the 1985 GSX-R 750. The result is the Origins, a machine that is more than just a cosmetic makeover. It's a statement, a snub to the purists who think the charm of the old can no longer coexist with modern lightning. Beneath this retro blue and white, there isn't a dinosaur, but a 202 horsepower predator ready to tear up the asphalt.

The recipe is simple, and that's where its genius lies. Take the chassis and engine of the GSX-R 1000 R, already one of the most accomplished and balanced sportbikes in the segment, and cover it in nostalgia. The perimeter aluminum frame, the Showa BPF fork, the Brembo radial calipers, all the arsenal is present. The 1000cc inline four-cylinder engine, with its 202 horsepower at 13,200 rpm and 117.7 Nm of torque, remains a marvel of responsiveness. It breathes aggression, revs up with linear fury, and its hoarse sound is a mechanical symphony far removed from the aseptic engines of some competitors. Next to it, a BMW S 1000 RR of the time seems almost too polished, too digital. The Suzuki, on the other hand, communicates through the wrists and buttocks.
But the real feat is the equipment. Suzuki didn't just stick on decals. The Origins arrives with a list of accessories that would make a preparer pale. The carbon Akrapovic exhaust, the fiber parts, the adjustable levers, the anodized chain tensioner, everything is there to please the eye and serve performance. Note the choice of Akrapovic rather than Yoshimura, the historical partner, a small break with tradition that shows that exclusivity is paramount. And this exclusivity comes at a price, a serious one: €24,999. A significant jump compared to the standard R. Here, you are buying a piece of history, numbered on 33 units, with its wooden crate and original parts carefully packaged alongside.
Who is it for? Certainly not a beginner, despite its vintage toy appearance. This motorcycle is a track tool dressed as a work of art. The 825 mm seat height and the aggressiveness of the riding position make it a demanding companion in the city. Its element is the circuit or winding roads where its surgically precise chassis can express itself. The weight of 203 kg fully fueled is forgotten from the first few meters, transformed into pure agility. Facing a Ducati Panigale V4, it may seem more analog, less brutal in power, but it offers a feeling of control and connection to the ground that has become rare.
So, marketing gimmick or sincere tribute? It doesn't matter. The GSX-R 1000 R Origins works because it is not an empty pastiche. It has the soul of a modern machine and the costume of a legend. It proves that pure performance can have a memory, and that a 300 km/h engine can beat to the rhythm of 1985. It is the perfect motorcycle for those who want to have the ultimate track weapon while attracting the attention of connoisseurs at the motorcycle bar. A rolling paradox, superbly executed.
