Overview
What separates a good road-going adventure bike from a true travel companion? Sometimes, just a pair of wheels. With the 2018 Suzuki DL 1000 V-Strom XT, Hamamatsu plays the card of subtle differentiation. Too subtle, some might say. Because behind the "XT" suffix that hints at a bold adventuring vocation, what you mainly find are wire-spoke wheels in place of the standard version's cast alloy rims. The rest of the package remains identical. No increased-travel suspension, no reinforced aluminum skid plate, no engine guards worthy of a true globetrotter. Suzuki lays the groundwork for an off-road look without following through on the approach.

That said, let's acknowledge that this pair of spokes is a visual game-changer. The V-Strom 1000 XT gains a presence the standard version never had. The revised styling for this 2018 generation, more angular and less fussy than the previous iteration, pairs well with this unapologetic adventure aesthetic. The tall windscreen, hand guards, and standard skid plate complete the silhouette. You get an adventure-GT that looks the part in a parking lot, even if its 850 mm seat height and 233 kg wet weight remind you this remains an accessible machine, far from the bulk of a BMW R 1200 GS or the towering stance of a KTM 1090 Adventure.
Beneath the 20-liter tank beats the 1037 cc 90° V-twin that Suzuki has been refining for years. Its 101 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and, more importantly, 101 Nm of torque from just 4,000 rpm make it a generous mid-range engine, ideal for devouring miles without fatigue. The six-speed gearbox does its job without fanfare. This twin lacks the fury of BMW's liquid-cooled twin or the raw character of KTM's parallel twin, but it offers a smoothness and availability that will appeal to long-distance tourers. The aluminum twin-spar perimeter frame, 43 mm inverted fork, and rear monoshock, both calibrated with 160 mm of travel, give the whole package nimble yet reassuring handling. The braking system, with its two 310 mm radially mounted front discs and four-piston calipers, proves effective without being sporty.
The real leap forward for this 2018 model year lies in the electronics. Suzuki integrates the five-axis Bosch inertial measurement unit, enabling lean-sensitive ABS. The manufacturer adds adjustable traction control operated from the left switchgear, an easy-start system, and a launch assist function that slightly raises engine speed when releasing the clutch. On this front, the V-Strom makes up some of its ground against the European competition, even if the interface remains more basic than what BMW or Ducati offer with the Multistrada 950.
At €13,399, the 2018 Suzuki DL 1000 V-Strom XT plays the value-for-money card against rivals often priced several thousand euros higher. It doesn't claim to rule the large adventure bike segment, dominated by the GS and closely followed by Triumph's Tiger 1050. It targets the pragmatic rider, the one who wants a versatile, reliable adventure bike, well equipped with electronics, backed by a proven engine, and within a controlled budget. The kind of machine you choose with your head rather than your heart, and that ends up winning you over through daily use. We simply wish Suzuki had pushed the envelope one step further on the XT version. Proper engine protection and purpose-built suspension would have been enough to transform this fine tourer into a true adventurer.
