Overview
When Suzuki released the first XT version of the V-Strom 1050, off-road purists smiled politely. Spoked wheels on a road-oriented adventure bike is a nice touch. But a 19-inch front wheel and suspension travel that plays it safe doesn't fool anyone. The V-Strom remained what it has always been: a versatile tourer dressed in adventure clothing. The DE version changes the equation — not entirely, but enough to warrant a closer look.

The silhouette, let's be honest, hasn't moved an inch. Suzuki hasn't touched the bodywork, the headlights, the 20-liter tank, or the exhaust. The DR 800 Big's legacy remains legible in every line. This visual conservatism can be frustrating, especially at €15,999, but the real transformation happens beneath the bodywork. The front wheel moves to a 90/90-21, and this simple format change says everything about the machine's intentions. Ground clearance rises to 190 mm, the wheelbase grows by 40 mm, suspension travel gains 10 mm at the front and 9 mm at the rear. The handlebar widens by 20 mm, the footpegs are now steel, the rear subframe is reinforced. The aluminum skid plate protects the underbelly effectively. This isn't an aesthetic revolution — it's pragmatic engineering work, and that's more honest.
The 1037 cc 90-degree L-twin receives a few targeted updates: sodium-filled hollow valves, revised first and sixth gears. It still delivers its 107 horsepower at 8,500 rpm and 100 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm. This engine has a history, a character built across several generations. It doesn't have the eagerness of a British parallel twin, but it offers a broad and straightforward power band, ideal for loading up the panniers and eating up the miles. At 252 kg fully fueled, the V-Strom 1050 DE carries its weight — five kilograms more than the XT. The BMW R 1250 GS is no lighter, and the competition in the large adventure tourer segment shows no mercy on the scales.

The electronics have caught up over the past few generations. The 5-inch TFT display is clear and well-organized, a welcome replacement for the old instrument clusters that were a source of embarrassment for the brand. Three engine maps are available via the SDMS, along with three-level traction control supplemented by a Gravel mode specific to the DE, designed to let the rear wheel work on loose surfaces. The IMU manages lean-sensitive ABS with rear deactivation, cornering ABS, linked braking, and hill start assist. A bidirectional quickshifter completes the package this year. For the asking price, the spec sheet is coherent, even if an adjustable seat height would have been appreciated — absent on this model despite being available on the standard version.
The V-Strom 1050 DE targets the adventure tourer rider who wants to venture off tarmac without spending weekends hammering out dented skid plates. It's not a Ténéré 700 or an Africa Twin Adventure Sports, the two current benchmarks when serious off-road riding is on the agenda. The 21-inch front wheel and improved ground clearance open the door to forest tracks, rocky paths, and unpaved mountain passes, but this V-Strom remains fundamentally at home on the road. Its 880 mm seat height naturally steers its customer base toward taller riders. For those who fit the profile — long-distance tourers curious about the road less traveled — it represents one of the most complete offerings in the market at this price point.
