Overview

Suzuki never truly abandoned the idea that the Katana deserved better than a simple return to grace. The neo-retro Hamamatsu machine has already flirted with a handful of accessory makers since its resurrection in 2019, accumulating special editions with the regularity of a well-broken-in engine. But this time, the brand renews a far older, far more visceral alliance: Yoshimura. The historic partnership that forged the legend of Suzuki's four-cylinder machines on the racetrack is back in business, and the result lives up to everything that relationship promised.

Suzuki 1000 Katana Yoshimura

Visually, the break from previous variants is clear-cut. Where the S version played the card of tasteful accessories, this Yoshimura edition embraces a decidedly more aggressive aesthetic. The paint, entrusted to AD-Koncept, wraps the machine in a dark and combative livery, crossed by the Japanese manufacturer's ideograms along the tank flanks. The front fender is carbon fiber — a detail that doesn't tip the scales much, but one that signals intent. The true showpiece remains the R-11 exhaust with its titanium body, fitted in place of the stock silencer. This system does more than enhance the soundtrack of the 999 cc four-cylinder, already cast in a deep and direct register: it sheds approximately 500 grams from the machine and delivers a few extra horsepower to an engine that already claims 150 hp at 10,000 rpm. Torque peaks at 105.9 Nm at 9,500 rpm — figures that place the Katana firmly in the company of top-tier naked sports bikes, facing rivals such as the Kawasaki Z900 and the Triumph Speed Triple.

Exclusivity is capped at ten units, not one more. Each example carries a numbered sticker on its tank, in the manner of a collector's series. The open-work aluminum license plate bracket helps clean up the rear line, often the weak point of Japanese motorcycles constrained by homologation requirements. Suzuki adds a custom cover embossed with the Katana logo, so the machine stays protected between rides. These touches draw a smile, but they are part of the desire-building mechanics inherent to limited editions.

The price, logically, steps up from the base model. Listed at €15,999 thanks to a €1,450 customer incentive offered by Suzuki, this figure places the Katana Yoshimura in contested territory. For that budget, a naked performance enthusiast could also look toward the Ducati Streetfighter V2 or a well-equipped used BMW S 1000 R. But those machines don't come as ten numbered examples carrying the symbolic weight of the Yoshimura name. The Katana is not aimed at the lap-time chaser; it targets the discerning rider — one who knows the brand's history, who appreciates the 214 kg wet weight on an 825 mm seat height, and who wants to ride something that won't be seen at every intersection. This is not a beginner's motorcycle; the engine's high-rpm character confirms as much. It is a machine for the lifelong enthusiast who understands what the alliance between Hamamatsu and the world's most celebrated Japanese tuner truly represents.
