Overview
When a brand like MV Agusta decides to shake things up, it never goes unnoticed. In 2013, and then in its refined 2015 version, the Rivale 800 threw a stone into the pond of hypermotards with a proposition that borders on insolence. Imagine: taking the legendary trio from the Brutale, raising it on long suspensions, and giving it the look of an urban raptor. The result? A motorcycle that doesn’t know whether it wants to scrape apexes or jump over sidewalks, and that’s precisely its charm. For those looking for a used MV Agusta Rivale 800, it’s this assumed ambiguity that makes the test worthwhile.

Beneath its sharp lines and predatory gaze, the technology is pure MV, but reworked for fun. The steel trellis frame houses the now-famous 798 cm3 three-cylinder engine, a motor that can do everything: rumble at low revs with 84 Nm of torque, then scream at 12,000 rpm to unleash its 125 horsepower. With a dry weight announced at 170 kg, the promise is kept: this machine is nervous, lively, and its explosive character immediately recalls that of the Brutale 800 from which it is derived. The difference? A revised geometry, a wheelbase of 1410 mm and a seat at 810 mm that provide a more upright, more dominant riding position, ideal for maneuvering in traffic or on winding roads.
However, faced with a Ducati Hypermotard of the time, the Rivale assumes a more radical, less polished character. The Marzocchi inverted fork and Sachs shock absorber are fully adjustable, offering enormous potential, but require a certain level of expertise to be properly set up. The braking system, with its Brembo discs, is of biting efficiency. In terms of equipment, the eas abs version of the MV Agusta Rivale 800 2014 brings the essential sequential gearbox and 8-level traction control, making this Italian motorcycle as technological as it is demanding. Its 12.9-liter tank, however, recalls that long-distance touring is not its preferred terrain.

So, who is this creature for? Clearly not for beginners, despite the versions restricted for A2 license holders. The new price of around €13,190 and its lively temperament reserve it for an experienced rider seeking singularity. It’s a motorcycle for those who find the Street Triple too common and the Hypermotard too obvious. An opinion on the MV Agusta Rivale 800 is often divided: you either love its bold design and charismatic engine, or you criticize its lack of versatility and sometimes fatiguing nervousness. Fans of the MV Agusta Rivale 800 technical specifications will find the pedigree of a sports bike in disguise.
Ultimately, the Rivale 800 remains an oddity in the motorcycle landscape. It did not achieve the hoped-for commercial success, which today makes it an interesting opportunity for collectors of edgy objects. It’s not the easiest motorcycle to live with, nor the most rational, but it possesses that flame, that grain of madness that is sorely lacking in so many current models. A test of the MV Agusta Rivale 800 is an experience, much more than a simple analysis. It makes no compromises, and that’s why we love it.
