Overview

It’s impossible to categorize it. That's the bold gamble of the MV Agusta Rivale 800. In 2014, when the market was divided between aggressive roadsters and adventure trails, Varese released this strange creature, a hybrid that refuses to be labeled. Neither fully an Italian hypermotard, nor truly a classic naked, it cultivates its own disorder with arrogant elegance.

MV Agusta Rivale 800

Look at it. It’s a moving piece of design. The silhouette is a play of permanent tensions: an aggressive front that shoots forward like a raptor's beak, a rear monobrach that exposes a sublime rim, and that signature MV exhaust triangle that seems sculpted with a box cutter. You can feel the influence of the Brutale, but deconstructed, elevated, as if we had given it steroids and a dose of wild instinct. At 810 mm of seat height, it towers over its rider, and its 12.9-liter tank seems carved from stone. For those looking for an MV Agusta Rivale 800 used, the aesthetic shock remains intact, even ten years later.

Under the hood of this rolling sculpture beats the famous 798 cm3 three-cylinder engine, directly imported from the Brutale 800. 125 horsepower at 12,000 rpm, 84.3 Nm of torque, all for a dry weight of 170 kg. The figures are eloquent. It’s a temperamental engine, which explodes in the revs and reminds you with every acceleration that mechanics can be a sadistic art. The trellis frame, Brembo calipers, adjustable Marzocchi fork, everything is inherited from the sportbike. But the geometry is modified, with a widened steering angle that promises formidable agility in the city. A test ride of the MV Agusta Rivale 800 confirms it: it weaves through traffic with the aplomb of a supermotard, but unleashes the fury of a roadster on the national highway. The standard EAS transmission, with its clutchless shifter, adds a touch of track to the whole.

MV Agusta Rivale 800

However, not everything is perfect in this idyllic picture. At €12,690 at the time, the price of the MV Agusta Rivale 800 bordered on indecency, especially compared to a often more versatile and affordable Ducati Hypermotard. The electronics, although complete with its 8-level traction control and Bosch disconnectable ABS, could seem complex for simple use. And this ridiculously small tank for such a touring motorcycle clearly limits its role. It is a machine for demanding aesthetes, for those who prioritize pure emotion over rationality. The target audience? An urban rider who dreams of the racetrack on the weekend, a collector seeking a unique piece, or simply a rebel who is tired of established codes.

Today, searching for an MV Agusta Rivale 800 2014 or a later version like the MV Agusta Rivale 800 EAS ABS, is hunting for a nugget. It did not revolutionize the market, but it proved that MV Agusta could think outside its usual lines. Between the enticing technical specifications and the reality of sometimes capricious use, it remains a seductive UFO. A blunt opinion? It’s an egoistic motorcycle. It doesn’t ask you if you are comfortable, if you are cold, or if you need range. It simply requires that you admire its madness, and that you ride it with the same unreasonable passion that presided over its creation. For the better, and sometimes for the worse.
