Can you still fall in love with a middleweight supersport when Japanese hypersports are going for the same price? That's the very question raised by the MV Agusta F3 RR 800, a machine that refuses to play by market rules. With the WorldSSP championship opening up to displacements above 600 cc, the playing field has changed. The Ducati Panigale V2 joined the fray, Triumph shoved its Street Triple 765 RS under a Daytona fairing. The F3 RR enters this arena with one argument nobody can dispute: looks that put the entire grid to shame.

The 798 cc triple is anything but a tame engine. With a 13.3:1 compression ratio and an ultra-oversquare bore and stroke of 79 x 54.3 mm, this high-revving powerplant churns out 147 horsepower at 13,000 rpm and 88 Nm of torque at 10,100 rpm. Titanium valves, revised injectors and a reworked exhaust system contribute to a ferocious, almost furious surge through the rev range. The sound of this triple remains unique in the motorcycle world, somewhere between a growl and a scream, depending on whether the needle is flirting with the midrange or plunging into the redline. Add the race-spec Akrapovic kit supplied as standard, complete with its dedicated ECU, and the beast climbs to 155 horsepower for a dry weight of 165 kg. The power-to-weight ratio then becomes downright obscene.
On the chassis side, MV Agusta stiffened its triple platform by redesigning the aluminum plates that cradle the tubular steel trellis frame. The rear wheel, shaved of 425 grams, cuts rotational inertia by 10%. On paper, it's a detail. Mid-corner, it's a change of character. The 43 mm Marzocchi inverted fork and Sachs monoshock deliver 125 and 130 mm of travel respectively, adjustable for preload, compression and rebound. Brembo Stylema calipers bite 320 mm discs with an authority that reassures when you arrive at 240 km/h at the end of a straight. The adoption of Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa IV tires rounds out a coherent, razor-sharp chassis package designed for the demanding track rider as much as the spirited road rider.
Aerodynamics mark the real turning point for this F3 RR. Winglets integrated into the carbon-fibre fairing panels generate 8 kg of aerodynamic downforce at top speed. The trade-off is a visual bulk that divides opinion. The original F3 was a slim, sensual blade; the RR adopts a more aggressive, almost belligerent muscularity. To offset the additional drag, the Varese engineers reworked the screen, the side panels and the front fender, the latter channelling air toward the calipers to cool them. The onboard electronics rise to the level of the best: an inertial measurement unit, Continental cornering ABS, lean-sensitive traction control, anti-wheelie, launch control, four riding modes and a third-generation bi-directional quickshifter. The 5.5-inch TFT display, compatible with the MV Ride app, lets you fine-tune settings from a smartphone.
Then there's the question of price. What does the MV Agusta F3 RR 800 cost in France? The bill comes to €24,500, an amount that puts it up against rivals significantly more powerful on paper. For that money, a Yamaha R1 or a Kawasaki ZX-10R can be found without difficulty. But neither of them offers this singing triple, this Italian exclusivity, nor this direct passport to WorldSSP. The F3 RR isn't aimed at the rider who compares spec sheets down to the last gram. It speaks to the one who wants to ride a mechanical work of art, push it on track days and come home with the smile of a rider who knows he owns something rare.
