Overview
It was in 1973 that MV-Agusta separated its aviation business from its motorcycle activity. But let's not dwell on that. Let's instead shine a spotlight on the 750 Sport, which appeared during that period, with its American-inspired color scheme and a 789 cm3 4-cylinder engine – slightly larger than the European version. This decoration has stood the test of time, and is presented as a "50th anniversary celebration" on the Dragster 800 RR SCS America. In reality, the 750 S was released in 1970. But it doesn’t matter to the Varese firm to skew a few figures; especially for a special edition – in more ways than one.
Firstly, it’s a limited series. 300 units, authenticated with a certificate and a laser-engraved serial number on a plate screwed onto the fork stem. Secondly, it’s sold exclusively in North America. MV-Agusta wants to show its gratitude to the Americans. Thirdly, a kit is included, comprising a transparent clutch cover (to lasciviously or actively view the Rekluse mechanism discs), a protective cover and the aforementioned certificate.
Above all, there’s this red and blue livery with white accents. A true copy of Superman’s costume; itself being based on Uncle Sam’s flag. It has accompanied certain MV-Agusta models for quite a few years. It can be found on the Brutale 750 S of 2005, the Brutale 1090 RR of 2012, the 800 Brutale of 2017, the Brutale 800 RR of the following year, up to its penultimate recipient, the Dragster 800 of 2019. The two-tone saddle is particularly appreciated, embellished with white "America Special Edition" embroidery on the rear flanks. Simply Italian class.
While the Dragster America 2023’s livery is very similar to that of 2019, the model is much more evolved. Its engine is in RR version, meaning it’s much more powerful with 140 horsepower. The dashboard is a 5.5-inch TFT screen, interpreting a lot of technologies with an inertial unit, traction control, anti-wheelie, ABS cornering, launch control, cruise control, Up&Down Shifter, adaptive cornering lighting and 4 Riding Modes. The Kineo spoke rims are still there but the rear one is now hidden by a carbon flange. Stylish... or not... The SCS name is there to specify that the Dragster is equipped with a particular clutch system, allowing for quasi-automatic operation while remaining mechanical.
MV-Agusta asks for an extra $5,000 for this America version. But even with this disproportionate increase, the MV-Agusta branded Akrapovic exhaust is optional. Petty! A pity. Thanks to this titanium element + the appropriate ECU, the Dragster RR goes to 148 horsepower.
This special model has been available since July 9th, a week after the American national holiday. Even with its inflated price, its success is in no doubt. Unlike its '73 ancestor, sold at three times the price of a CB 750 and sold out in less than 600 units in 6 years. But today, you buy prestige before you buy a motorcycle, especially in the States.
