Overview
When a wealthy client knocks on the factory door in Varese with an idea as outlandish as it is precise, MV Agusta doesn't flinch. The Italian firm has built its reputation on uncompromising standards and a clientele that sometimes pushes it into its most unlikely territory. The Dragster 800 RC Shining Gold is the result of that singular relationship between an intransigent manufacturer and a thrill-seeker who wanted to ride something no other human being would ever own.

The concept is as simple as it is blunt: take the Dragster 800 RC, one of the sharpest nakeds on the market with its 150 horsepower drawn from a 798 cc three-cylinder screaming to 12,800 rpm, and dip it in gold. Not metaphorically. The tubular steel trellis frame, the wheels, the radiator scoops, the tank sides and top, the front fender, the levers, the instrument surround, the exhaust heat shield, the lower frame beneath the seat, right down to the grilles under the pillion — everything receives that golden finish, leaving no doubt as to the client's aesthetic intentions. A few carbon and ergal components cut through the blazing monochrome, and the seat is distinguished by yellow stitching that completes the chromatic palette. A custom X-Lite X-803 Ultra Carbon helmet was specially finished to accompany the machine, because it would have been a shame to stop halfway.
Mechanically, this Shining Gold stays true to the Dragster RC from which it is directly derived. The inline three-cylinder with a 13.3:1 compression ratio, 79 mm bore and 54.3 mm stroke, delivers 87 Nm of torque at 10,100 rpm. The SC Project exhaust is part of the package — no trivial option on a machine that reaches 245 km/h. At 168 kg dry for that power output, the power-to-weight ratio remains firmly in the territory of nakeds that bite hard. Brembo radial-mount calipers with 320 mm discs up front ensure the deceleration matches the acceleration. The 811 mm seat height and the Dragster's characteristic riding position are a reminder that this machine was not conceived for long-haul touring, but for imposing its presence through every corner.
The real question the Shining Gold raises is not one of performance, but of taste. MV Agusta practices the art of the motorcycle the way others practice haute couture, and this one-off — whose serial number engraved on the steering damper underlines the absolute nature of its exclusivity — sits somewhere between collector's piece and deliberate provocation. At €25,000 for the base RC, one can easily imagine what such a bespoke commission will have cost the client. The intended audience here is not the rider chasing a performance-to-price ratio, nor even the reasonable enthusiast. It is the collector who wants to ride something irreplaceable in the most literal sense of the word.
Whether you find this Shining Gold magnificent or vulgar, it at least has the virtue of honesty. It makes no pretense of being anything other than what it is: an extravagant commission for a client who wanted the one-of-a-kind, executed by a manufacturer that knows how to deliver both.
