Overview

Who would have thought that a 90° V-twin air-cooled engine could still make hearts race in 2021? Yet, this is the bet held, and successfully, by the Moto Guzzi V7 Special. This machine, far from being a simple relic, embodies a constant dialogue between its heritage and contemporary requirements. It directly follows in the line of mythical models like the 1971 Moto Guzzi V7 Special, but with modern internals.

Moto Guzzi V7 Special

Beneath its refined aesthetics, sparkling chrome, and spoked rims, beats the new 850 cm³ block. With 65 horsepower at 6800 rpm and 73 Nm of torque available from 5000 rpm, it provides the breath that was sometimes lacking in previous generations. This engine, a cousin of the V85 TT but calmed down, transforms the experience. The thrust is more direct, the rumble more substantial, without ever betraying the placid and accessible character that made the line a success. For a Moto Guzzi V7 Special test ride, it is this mechanical maturity that immediately stands out. It allows the Guzzi to look straight into the eyes of competitors like the Triumph Bonneville, with an ace up its sleeve: the shaft drive, clean, silent and indestructible.

With a declared weight of 235 kg fully fueled and a seat height of 770 mm, the V7 Special 2021 remains an accessible motorcycle. It clearly targets the elegant globetrotter or the novice seeking character, much more than the track rider in need of strong sensations. Its braking, ensured by a single Brembo disc at the front, is effective without being aggressive, and the double cradle chassis offers reassuring stability. The 150 mm ground clearance and the 1463 mm wheelbase confirm this philosophy: serenity above all. Note that it is perfectly prepared for the A2 license, further expanding its audience.

However, some choices are striking. The analog combination, although beautiful, seems a little too timid compared to the fully digital version of the Stone. The absence of a headlight signature in the shape of an eagle may disappoint detail purists. And at a price flirting with 9600 euros, the competition is fierce. The Triumph Street Twin immediately comes to mind, more powerful and perhaps more versatile. But that is to ignore the unique soul of this Italian. The V7 Special is not sold on the spec sheet, but on emotion. It is a retro object of desire, a time machine with the assurance of being compliant with Euro5 standards and equipped with traction control.

Finding a used Moto Guzzi V7 Special remains an excellent plan to access this living myth, especially since the mechanics have proven themselves. As for Moto Guzzi V7 Special accessories, they allow you to personalize this platform almost endlessly, from classic saddlebags to more singing exhausts. Ultimately, this Special is not the fastest or most agile motorcycle in its category. But it is undoubtedly one of the most authentic. It proves that charm, this old internal combustion engine, is still a sure value on two wheels.
