Overview
Imagine a Sunday morning on a deserted highway, the 90° L-twin V-twin growling softly beneath you, 120.6 Nm available from 2750 rpm, and that feeling of quiet power unique to machines that have nothing to prove. This is exactly what the Moto Guzzi California 1400 Touring SE delivers: a philosophy of travel the Italian way, unhurried and uncompromising on character.

Measured against a Harley-Davidson Street Glide or an Indian Roadmaster, the California plays a different tune. Where the Americans rely on folklore and showmanship, the Mandello del Lario twin asserts a more organic presence, almost alive. The 96 horsepower at 6500 rpm may look modest on paper for a machine weighing 337 kg fully fuelled, but that figure tells only part of the story. The shaft drive, the well-spaced six-speed gearbox, and that generous low-end torque make everyday riding a fluid experience, far removed from the tension of sportier machines.
This Special Edition brings a few welcome refinements for the demanding long-distance rider. The two-tone warm brown colour scheme gives the motorcycle a distinguished look, well removed from the chrome-heavy aesthetic typical of the segment. The side deflectors work effectively alongside the windscreen to filter fatigue on motorway stretches, the sissy bar gives the passenger confidence on long stages, and the integrated panniers swallow a weekend's worth of luggage without argument. The riding position with a 740 mm seat height remains accessible to a wide range of rider builds, broadening the intended audience accordingly.
The onboard electronics also deserve a mention, because Moto Guzzi has not sacrificed modernity on the altar of nostalgia. ABS, traction control, multiple engine maps, and cruise control are all part of the package: a far cry from the rough-and-ready cruisers of the 1990s. The steel tubular frame and suspension — a Ø 46 mm front fork with 120 mm of travel and twin rear shock absorbers — offer an honest compromise between comfort and straight-line stability. Not a weapon on twisty roads, but reassuringly stable over long distances.
The Moto Guzzi California 1400 Touring SE is clearly aimed at the seasoned long-haul rider who refuses to choose between character and practicality. At €20,149, it competes in the premium large-displacement bracket, and the competition at this price point is unforgiving. What Mandello offers in return is a soul that Japanese manufacturers still struggle to replicate: the persistent impression of riding something alive, built by people who genuinely love motorcycles.
