Overview

Two hundred years. That's how long it took for this alpine road carved into the bedrock to become a legend in its own right, a pilgrimage for motorcyclists from around the world. The Stelvio Pass, 2758 meters in altitude, 88 hairpin turns spread across its two slopes, deserved more than just a commemorative plaque. Moto Guzzi chose its own way to celebrate the anniversary: a limited series named Duecento Tributo, produced in exactly 2758 units. The number is no coincidence.

The livery strikes first. This white, blue, and red tricolor on the bodywork might lend itself to confusion, but Mandello del Lario isn't engaging in hexagonal chauvinism. The white evokes the permanent snow that crowns the peaks, the vibrant tones recall the equipment of mountaineers, and the flanks bear engraved GPS coordinates of the pass: 46° 31' 42.96'' north, 10° 27' 09.72'' east. A detail that says a lot about the care given to this special edition, beyond a simple commemorative paint job.

Under the bodywork, the Stelvio in its best-equipped version serves as the base. The 90-degree transverse V-twin of 1042 cc develops 115 horsepower at 8800 rpm and a torque of 104.9 Nm available from 6750 rpm, all transmitted by shaft, as is customary at Guzzi. This engine possesses a character that Japanese inline twins cannot simulate: calibrated vibrations, an organic sound, a very particular way of pulling in the revs. The Duecento Tributo adds heated grips and seat, the bidirectional quickshifter, tire pressure monitoring, the center stand, a radiator grille dressed in stylized wings, and a numbered riser plate, laser engraved. Only luggage is missing to leave directly.

The electronic arsenal is not lacking either. Five riding modes cover the complete spectrum: Turismo to swallow kilometers without fatigue, Pioggia when the sky clouds over at altitude, Strada for everyday use, Sport when the desire to unleash the 115 horsepower becomes pressing, and Off-Road to leave the pavement. The latter mode deserves a closer look: ABS disengages from the rear wheel, traction control intervenes at a minimum, engine braking becomes very present. The 46 mm inverted fork with 170 mm of travel and the single-sided rear monoshock with the same amplitude justify this claimed versatility. The 120/70-19 tires at the front and 170/60-17 at the rear confirm the trail positioning, neither truly road-pure nor truly radical adventurer. The radar system complements the equipment with front collision warning, blind spot detection, and lane change monitoring. At 220 km/h announced, these aids are not superfluous.

The problem is the price. At 18,799 euros, this Stelvio Duecento Tributo positions itself in a segment where BMW, KTM, and Ducati are elbowing each other without restraint. The R 1300 GS and the KTM 1290 Super Adventure each have their own figures and well-established distribution networks. Guzzi responds with what neither one nor the other can offer: a soul, a history rooted in these very Alps that the machine celebrates, and this V-twin that pulses like a heart rather than like an engine. For the globetrotter who wants a motorcycle that tells a story beyond its specifications, this may be exactly the right argument. For those who maximize the equipment/price ratio, other options exist. This Stelvio does not seek to convince everyone. It knows very well who it is.
