Overview
Ten years. That's how long it took Mattighofen to resurrect the 990 designation in its Duke lineup. The old Super Duke 990, armed with its fierce 999 cc V-twin, had taken its final bow in 2013. The 2024 KTM Duke 990 picks up the torch with a different philosophy, a parallel-twin LC8c displacing 947 cc tucked beneath a chromium-molybdenum steel trellis frame. Gone is the noble V-twin, replaced by the vertical architecture that proved itself on the 890. But make no mistake. With 123 horsepower at 9,500 rpm and 103 Nm of torque from just 6,750 rpm, this KTM Duke 990 hits harder than its predecessor, which topped out at 122 hp for 98 Nm. One more horse, five extra newton-meters, and above all, peak torque arriving 250 rpm lower. On paper, the improvement is slim. On the road, the difference is felt in every burst of acceleration.

Against the competition, the positioning is crystal clear. The Triumph Street Triple 765 RS plays in a lower displacement class with its 130 hp, while the Ducati Streetfighter V2 aims higher in both price and performance. The Duke 990 slots right between the two, with a killer argument: 179 kg dry. That's ferocious. The power-to-weight ratio puts this Austrian machine on par with the big roadsters of ten years ago, confirming that the mid-size segment has caught up with the bikes that used to make wrists tremble. The 2024 KTM Duke 990 is priced at 14,949 euros, placing it in the upper-middle range of the segment without reaching hyper-naked territory. For those eyeing the sharper version, the KTM Duke 990 R pushes the envelope even further in terms of chassis and running gear.
On the chassis front, KTM spared no expense. The trellis frame gains 8% in lateral rigidity and 5% in torsion compared to the 890 platform, while the high-pressure cast swingarm sheds 1.5 kg and sees its rigidity reduced by 35%. This choice is no accident: a more compliant swingarm better filters road imperfections and delivers more progressive feedback to the rider. The WP Apex suspension, adjustable in five-position increments for rebound and compression at the front, five clicks of rebound and ten of preload at the rear, provides 140 mm of travel on the 43 mm inverted fork and 150 mm on the shock. No need to break out the calculator counting half-turns on an adjuster knob. The braking follows the same no-nonsense approach: twin 300 mm discs clamped by radial-mount four-piston calipers up front, a 240 mm disc at the rear. More than enough to anchor the beast to the tarmac when the pace picks up.
The onboard electronics deserve a closer look, and not just for their qualities. The 5-inch TFT display gives access to five riding modes: Street, Sport, Rain, then Performance and Track. Except those last two, along with the quickshifter, are offered as paid options. KTM graciously activates them for 1,500 kilometers, just long enough to get used to them, before cutting the tap. The strategy is debatable. Getting a taste of an anti-wheelie system adjustable across five levels and a traction control fine-tuned over ten settings, only to have them taken away afterward, feels more like a sales tactic than a favor. The top speed of the KTM Duke 990 reaches 220 km/h, enough to satisfy track day enthusiasts without pretending to compete with pure sportbikes. The 14.8-liter tank remains a bit tight for high-mileage riders, especially with a 13.5:1 compression ratio that demands premium 98-octane fuel.

This Duke 990 casts a wide net. Powerful enough to thrill an experienced rider coming out of a corner, yet accessible enough in seat height (825 mm) and ergonomics not to intimidate a motorcyclist stepping up from an 890 or a 790. It is not eligible for the A2 license, even restricted, which reserves it for full license holders. For those looking for a used KTM Duke 990, the first examples are starting to appear on the second-hand market with still-modest depreciation. That said, the 2025 generation is expected to carry over on the same technical platform, making the investment in the 2024 model year perfectly sound. KTM has built a mid-size roadster that hits hard, brakes true, and weighs nothing. The V-twin is gone, the character remains.
