Overview
In 2006, KTM decided to make a bold statement in the adventure trail segment. The Austrian brand, until then pigeonholed in the collective mind as a pure hardcore enduro manufacturer, arrived with the KTM 990 Adventure S, a machine built to devour continents. The message was clear: they weren't here to play, they were here to win.

Beneath the 22-liter tank beats a 999 cc V-twin, set at a compression ratio of 11.5:1, delivering 98 horsepower at 8,500 rpm and, more importantly, 95 Nm of torque from just 6,000 rpm. It's punchy, almost aggressive for a trail bike. By comparison, the BMW R 1200 GS of the same era offered a smoother, more diesel-like character. Here, the Austrian twin pushes hard, with an oversquare bore of 101 mm and a stroke of 62.5 mm that betrays a genuine appetite for revs. The six-speed gearbox with chain final drive confirms the sporty intent of the project, where Munich opted for a more touring-friendly shaft drive. KTM owns it: this adventurer has attitude.
The chromoly tubular frame, light and rigid, helps keep the dry weight at 199 kg. That's reasonable for a machine of this size. The WP suspension—a 48 mm inverted fork up front and a PDS monoshock with hydraulic preload at the rear—offers generous travel that isn't just there for show. The 296 mm ground clearance speaks for itself: this motorcycle is designed to go where others stop. The tire fitment in 90/90-21 front and 150/70-18 rear reinforces this off-road vocation, with dimensions that allow fitting proper knobby tires without any modifications. The seat perched at 895 mm will demand long legs, however. Shorter riders will have to adapt or invest in a lowered seat.

On the road, the KTM 990 Adventure S proves livelier than the Japanese competition of the era, the Suzuki V-Strom 1000 chief among them, which favored plush comfort over engagement. The braking, handled by dual discs up front and a single disc at the rear, gets the job done without particular brilliance but remains effective for the intended dual-purpose use. The 1,570 mm wheelbase provides reassuring stability at high speed, with a claimed top speed of 210 km/h. Enough for highway transfers between two trails, without pretending to rival a streetfighter on the matter.

Priced at 12,990 euros at launch, the machine positioned itself as a credible alternative to the Bavarian queen, with an extra dose of soul and off-road capability. It targets travelers who don't want to bypass the beat-up trail, adventurers looking for a bike capable of riding fast on tarmac in the morning and fording a river crossing in the afternoon. Not a beginner's machine, clearly. The rider who will get the most out of it is one who already has a few thousand kilometers of dirt under their wheels. For the rest, the standard version, less sharp-edged, offered a gentler entry point. The 990 Adventure S is KTM telling the trail world: comfort is fine, but real adventure has to be earned.
