Overview
Who, in 2006, had the audacity to take a 942 cc twin built to devour African trails and throw it into the woods? KTM, obviously. While BMW was trying its hand with the HP2, the Austrians decided to push the envelope even further with the KTM 950 Super Enduro R. The concept is simple on paper, radical in practice: start with the Adventure platform, strip away everything useless in the forest, and turn the result into an all-terrain war machine. The kind of bike that doesn't ask permission before entering a single track.

The twin-cylinder engine develops 98 horsepower at 8,500 rpm with 95 Nm of torque available from 7,000 rpm. With a 100 mm bore and a 60 mm stroke, this is an oversquare architecture that loves to rev. The 11.5:1 compression ratio confirms the sporty temperament of the engine. On the scales, 185 kg dry. That's heavy for an enduro, nobody will argue otherwise. But it's also remarkably restrained for a machine of this displacement. The weight-shedding program compared to the Adventure is severe: plastic tank reduced to 13 liters, fairing removed, Akrapovic exhaust as standard. KTM cut the fat without hesitation.
On the chassis side, the chromoly tubular frame hosts WP suspension at both ends. A 48 mm inverted fork up front, a single shock at the rear. The 296 mm ground clearance lets you get through just about anywhere, but the seat perched at 920 mm reserves the KTM 950 Super Enduro R for riders with long inseams and real experience. The spoked rims fitted with 90/90-21 front and 140/80-18 rear tires wear knobby rubber. A single disc at each wheel is enough. In serious off-road riding, braking power matters less than modulation, and KTM understood that well. The 1,570 mm wheelbase provides decent stability without compromising agility in technical sections.
This machine was clearly aimed at extreme enduro enthusiasts, those who dream of Erzberg and impossible rock sections. The KTM 950 Super Enduro R Erzberg 2009 edition has remained in collective memory as a benchmark of the genre. Offered at 11,750 euros at launch, it competed in a nearly empty category. Only the BMW HP2 Enduro occupied the same niche, with a softer flat boxer philosophy and a different center of gravity. The KTM, on the other hand, banked on the unapologetic brutality of its V-twin and its ability to take a beating. On the used KTM 950 Super Enduro R market, well-maintained examples now command strong prices, proof that the love affair hasn't faded.
The verdict is clear-cut. This bike isn't made for everyone. It demands fitness, riding skill, and a genuine desire to take on the terrain. Reading through a KTM 950 Super Enduro R spec sheet isn't enough to gauge its character. You have to grab it by the handlebars to understand that unique blend of raw power and sharp chassis. Twenty years on, no manufacturer has truly picked up the torch with as much conviction. That might be the finest tribute anyone could pay it.
