Overview
Who said that an adventure worthy of the name necessarily had to involve a generous twin cylinder and sophisticated electronics? Let's go back to 2006, when KTM still fielded roaring single-cylinder engines in its expedition models. The KTM 640 LC4 Adventure is the pure product of this philosophy: a desert Swiss Army knife, pared down to the essentials, which makes its limitations its greatest assets. With its 55 horsepower delivered by a 625 cm3 LC4 single, it is far from the excessive power of today's large trail bikes. But it is precisely this assumed simplicity that shapes its character. Torque is present from low RPM, with 56.9 Nm at 5500 rpm, a crucial figure when it comes to getting out of a rutted track without drowning in mechanics.

What immediately strikes you is its featherweight. Dry, the machine displays 154 kg, a remarkable performance for a machine equipped with a 28-liter tank. This lightness, coupled with WP suspension with generous travel (275 mm at the front, 300 mm at the rear), makes it an undisputed queen of technical trails. The seat height of 945 mm asserts its size, but once in the saddle, the position is royal, whether seated or standing on the footpegs. The efficient fairing and comfortable seat are the assets of a machine designed for long hours, far from everything. Compared to a BMW F650 GS of the time, more road-oriented and sedentary, the KTM 640 LC4 Adventure R clearly displays its adventurous vocation.
On the asphalt, the single breathes freely and can seem a little vibrant beyond 110 km/h, with a top speed approaching 165 km/h. It is clearly not a motorway bike, and you have to accept its lively and demanding temperament. Braking, with its 300 mm front disc, is biting and precise, perfect for impromptu stops in varied terrain. The five-speed gearbox is precise, but requires anticipation, the engine not liking to be under the revs. This is where the entire philosophy of this KTM 640 LC4 Adventure 2004 and later lies: it demands participation, feeling. It doesn’t flatter, it teaches.
Today, finding a KTM 640 LC4 Adventure used in good condition is a treasure hunt. Its new price was justified by its high-end equipment, notably its WP suspension, but it represented a significant investment. For whom? For the demanding globetrotter who prioritizes off-road efficiency over soft comfort, for those who dream of lightweight and mechanically simple trail bikes, in the image of the machines from the Dakar of yesteryear. It doesn’t have the smooth versatility of a Tiger or the power of an Africa Twin, but it offers something unique: the pure feeling of riding a specialized tool, without artifice. A machine that, more than a means of transport, is a passport to authentic adventure.
