Overview
Can a motorcycle still deliver thrills in 2005 when displaying barely 55 horsepower? Asking the question already answers it, especially when this engine bears the orange sigil of KTM. The 640 LC4 Adventure, and its more radical derivative the LC4 Adventure R, are not machines to be consulted on an Excel spreadsheet. No, these are manifestos on two wheels, direct heirs to the Dakar that have retained that soul of a pure adventurer, even for the used models that are hunted today.

Consider this engine. A large 625 cm3 single-cylinder engine delivering 55 Nm of torque from 5500 rpm. On paper, compared to more modern twins, it appears rustic, even noisy. But get on the saddle, and everything becomes clear. This engine is alive, direct, incredibly light to turn over. It doesn't overwhelm you with a sterile flood of power, it gives you piston kicks in the lower back, a frank dialogue with the road, or rather with the track. It is the beating heart of KTM adventure, a proven LC4 block that makes this trail bike a bike apart.
And speaking of the chassis, with a 25.5-liter tank and a dry weight announced at 158 kg, the 640 Adventure clearly displays its transcontinental ambitions. The 315 mm ground clearance and long-travel WP suspension are not there for show. This motorcycle is designed to swallow the rough terrain, to stand on the footpegs without the rider fighting an unmanageable mass. Compared to a BMW F650 GS of the time, more road-oriented and refined, the KTM is a wildcat, demanding but terribly effective as soon as the tarmac ends. The riding position is regal, the protective fairing, and this seat height of 94.5 cm places you as an observer above the common mortals.
So yes, at nearly 8700 euros at the time, the bill could sting. And on the highway, the single-cylinder vibrates and the top speed peaks around 165 km/h. It is not a machine for everyone. It is aimed at the adventurous globetrotter who prefers the trail to the national road, the one who seeks a raw mechanical complicity. The KTM 640 LC4 Adventure 2004 or 2005, found today as a used model, is not a compromise motorcycle. It is a passionate choice, a tool for those who think that the journey truly begins where the road ends. A pure product of KTM philosophy, without compromise.
