Overview
The market never ceases to shower us with motorcycles built for adventure, whether purely marketing hype or possessing genuine capabilities. However, how does that work when you don’t have a full-size license or want a modest displacement machine? The choice is restricted in the 125 category for discussing with the forest, the slightly wild spaces, or just running alongside the meadow.
It is precisely in this area that the KTM 125 Enduro R arrives. The Austrian brand finally offers something more accessible than its EXC models and less imposing than the 690 Enduro R. There was even a monster in the catalog at one time, the 950 Super Enduro R. Its expansive industrial logic allows for full synergy exploitation, and to go further than the Duke roadster with the same base. This is evidenced by the small SMC R models.
Although there are about twenty enduro models in the EXC range, Katoche did not adopt their design for its 125. The appearance is less radical, the riding position less high, the technical level less pronounced – you feel instantly that they don’t play in the same category. You have to look in another section to find a marked resemblance. In this case, with the 125 SMC R, which is nothing other than the twin of the 125 Enduro R.
KTM goes so far in platform collaboration that the SMC and Enduro share exactly the same graphics, with the sole exception of the motorcycle name on the sides. The designers could have indulged in a little effort to avoid the impression that only the wheels are different between the two machines.
The structure is also identical. The trellis tubular frame is closely derived from that of the Duke, distinguished by its different column angle and a rigidity more suited to off-road use. The subframe is bolted, more practical to change in case of damage. The swingarm is specific to this family where the trail attempts various routes.
SMC and Enduro are from the same mold but the adventurer shows its aptitudes with an aluminum engine guard, some hand protectors, and above all, much more suitable wheels. Its spoked rims are ready for dirt outings, with 21 inches at the front and 18 at the rear, shod with thinner tires and adorned with blocks – Metzeler Karoo 4. It also revises the braking system, which must be more "flexible" in off-road. The Bybre caliper here has an axial fixing and bites a smaller disc, of 285 mm instead of 320 mm. Behind, we remain at 240 mm and a piston.
The 125 Enduro R also inherits the suspensions of the SMC, with the same 230 mm travel. No adjustments for the 43 mm inverted fork and just preload for the mono-shock. This is quite normal for this level of range. Its ground clearance of 272 mm allows for the consideration of many difficulties; it is superior to that of an 890 Adventure R, a 1100 Africa Twin or a 700 Ténéré.
Given its experience, KTM could not compromise on a braking system adapted to travers and pebbles. And enthusiasts of the discipline know (and will transmit to novices) how much more fun and more agile the motorcycle is when you can chase the rear wheel. It is therefore possible to deactivate ABS on the rear with its Offroad Mode; or even completely restrain it on both wheels for the most experienced.
To move, 15 horsepower will be available to the rider. The small LC4c single-cylinder cannot produce more but this will allow for discoveries without apprehension. A mechanical system that is doing well for the Duke. It differs only in its airbox and its position in the frame, the whole being raised to optimize ground clearance. The exhaust line design is such that a silencer is not useful to calm down the sound emissions. Moreover, this allows a gain of two kilos.
If for some the 125 denomination rhymes with simplicity or technological idleness, the 125 Enduro R will shake their minds. We talked about its multi-mode ABS... this is only part of it because the machine is also equipped with an anti-dribble clutch, can have a quickshifter as an option, receives LEDs for its headlights and turn signals, has backlit commodos as well as a 4-way joystick to pilot its interface, incorporates a USB port, can connect via Bluetooth to the smartphone and informs the rider with a 4.2-inch color TFT screen. It seems minimalist with its display monopolizing the speed and the engaged gear.... Until connectivity tickles it and it offers you the supervision of music, calls and turn-by-turn navigation.
There was a time when abundance in 125 farm bikes left the heart dreaming of escape. But where have the Yamaha XT, WR and DTR 125, Kawasaki KLX and KMX, Suzuki DR and Honda CRM gone? The major Japanese brands have abandoned the field. KTM, a major specialist in muscular touring, has until now offered only 125 pure enduros, for already experienced amateurs or category specialists. This new little 125 Enduro R finally allows to reach more people and to initiate randonneurs.
