Overview
They say the 600 supersport is outdated? Try telling that to the 2013 ZX-6R, and especially its Performance version. This beast, with its 128 horsepower screaming at 14,000 rpm, hasn’t aged a bit. It remains a pure instrument of legal torture, designed for the track but capable of sculpting your wrist on any mountain road. Its secret? A perimeter aluminum frame offering surgical rigidity, coupled with a 41 mm inverted fork. All this for an announced weight of 189 kg when fully fueled, which places it in the lower-middle range of its category, against competitors like the Honda CBR600RR or the Yamaha YZF-R6.

Kawasaki had the good idea to offer this special edition, which draws from the accessories catalog to erase the few compromises of the standard model. The high screen is serious business for those who want to devour asphalt without having their neck disassembled by the wind. The Akrapovic carbon silencer, for its part, is not just an acoustic embellishment. In addition to making the inline-four sing with a more raspy voice, it lightens the machine by 2.5 kg and releases a hint of extra power. The single-seat cover, finally, is a clear message: here, we don’t do taxi service. It’s a selfish motorcycle, designed for the rider and nothing else.
On paper, the mechanics are a masterpiece of precision. An oversized bore of 67 mm for a short stroke of 42.5 mm, all with a compression ratio of 13.3:1, is the recipe for an engine that loves to rev, quickly and high. Torque, 66.7 Nm at 11,800 rpm, is not its strong point, but that’s not what it’s asked to do. You have to make it scream, mistreat it in the revs, and it responds with a sharp acceleration like a scalpel. The brakes, with their 300 mm petal discs at the front, have the bite necessary to calm this ardor.
So, who is this Ninja for? Certainly not a beginner, who would be overwhelmed by its sharp character and combat riding position. No, it’s the ideal mount for the enlightened track rider who also wants to ride the road on Sundays, or for the demanding sporty touring rider who doesn’t compromise on pure sensations. At 12,999 euros, it costs a little more than a base model, but the added equipment makes sense. It’s not the easiest to live with, its 815 mm seat can be intimidating, and its 17-liter tank reminds you that it was born for performance, not for road trips. But for those seeking the very essence of the 600 supersport, this ZX-6R Performance remains a reference, a lesson in engaged mechanics that refuses to age.
