Overview
They called it the "everyman's roadster," and for good reason: the standard Z750 had long topped the sales charts in France. But in 2012, Kawasaki decided to add a letter, an R, and a dose of adrenaline for those who found the base model a little too tame. The Kawasaki Z750R Black Edition is exactly that proposition: taking a proven engine and giving it an evening suit, almost entirely black, to seduce the buyer seeking character without breaking the bank.

Under the 18.5-liter fuel tank, the inline four retains its fundamentals: 748 cm3, 106 horsepower at 10,500 rpm, and 78 Nm of torque. Nothing excessive, but an elasticity that awakens after 6,000 rpm and pulls cleanly to the redline. That is the whole philosophy of this engine: accessible, reliable, with a well-crafted sound that avoids the flatness of overly sanitized competitors. The lightweight and rigid perimeter steel frame offers a solid foundation, while the 41 mm inverted fork and the remote reservoir rear shock provide the seriousness that was lacking in the standard version. At 224 kg fully fueled, it’s not a featherweight, but its low center of gravity and ergonomics (815 mm seat height) make it manageable in the city as well as at traffic lights.
The main argument for this limited series is its look. The 2012 Kawasaki Z750R Black Edition, and its 2013 variant, play the card of dark elegance. Black bodywork, black rims, black exhaust… Only a thin red stripe on the rims and the lettering hint at a sporty appetite. An aesthetic engine guard and anodized handlebar risers are added, details that would have cost a fortune as optional extras on the standard R. At €8,899 at the time, the deal was rather honest. Today, searching for a used Kawasaki Z750R Black Edition remains a good deal for those who want a restrained, well-equipped roadster, avoiding the bling-bling of some Italians.
Who is it for? Not for the pure-bred track rider, who would prefer a more responsive Street Triple or an FZ8 with a more aggressive character. No, the Z750R Black Edition targets the urban traveler who wants a bit of stability in corners without sacrificing everyday comfort. It forgives, it reassures, and its engine doesn’t require a doctorate in torque management to be appreciated. Its flaw? This weight felt at high speed and a fork that, although high quality, lacks a little adjustment for the most demanding riders. But as an overall proposition, it perfectly embodies this era of balanced roadsters, neither too crazy nor too tame. An honest machine, dressed for the evening.
