Overview
In the early 2000s, the Japanese custom segment was bubbling under the influence of a trend that showed no signs of fading. Kawasaki, which had already sensed the opportunity since the first Kawasaki VN 800 Classic in 1996, refined its recipe for the 2003 model year without overhauling a well-established formula. This 805 cc cruiser openly plays the card of a nod to post-war Harleys, with its large 130/90-16 front wheel, generous fork tubes, and tank with almost caricatural curves. Akashi embraces its visual lineage, and then some.

Beneath the faux American appearance, however, purrs a typically Japanese V-twin, more civilized than its Milwaukee cousins. The 805 cc V-twin, bored to 88 mm for a stroke of 66.2 mm, delivers 56 horsepower at 7000 rpm and a comfortable torque of 63.7 Nm from 3300 rpm. This is a radical departure from the philosophy of a Yamaha Drag Star 650, more modest under the right pedal, or even a Honda Shadow 750 whose character remains tame in the upper revs. The Kawa engine willingly climbs, sustains the effort, and pushes up to 167 km/h at top speed. Its most direct rival, the Suzuki Marauder 800, plays a more dragster-oriented and less traditional tune. Here, we're squarely in old-school custom territory, unapologetically so.
On the chassis side, the double cradle of drawn steel and the 1600 mm wheelbase impose a composed riding style. At 245 kg fully fueled (235 kg dry), it doesn't weave through traffic like a roadster, but its 705 mm seat height is immediately reassuring. Smaller riders plant their feet flat without grimacing, which significantly broadens the target audience. The 41 mm telehydraulic fork absorbs adequately, and the rear mono-shock works over 100 mm of travel. Braking, however, shows its age. A single 300 mm front disc pinched by a two-piston caliper, a 180 mm rear drum — enough for cruising peacefully, not for playing apprentice racer.
Sold at €7499 new, the Kawasaki VN 800 Classic positioned itself in the upper-mid range of the segment, but it's mainly on the kawasaki vn 800 classic used market that it truly makes sense today. The model years have stacked up since 1997, 1998, 1999, through the 2001, 2005, and 2006 versions, with very few changes on the spec sheet. This stability delights owners, who easily track down kawasaki vn 800 classic parts and accessories within the specialist network. Plusher comfort seats, exhausts with a raspier voice, thick leather saddlebags — options to personalize your mount abound. Forums and clubs dedicated to the machine are veritable goldmines for anyone looking to make it more reliable or transform it bobber-style, or into a more radical custom kawasaki vn 800 classic.
It remains an honest cruiser, without sporting pretension, embracing its role as a Sunday rider and modest tourer with its 15-liter tank, too stingy for long-distance raids. The hardcore tourer will prefer a larger displacement, the track rider will pass by without even turning his head. But for a beginner in search of a reassuring first custom, or for the urban rider who wants to ride old-school without saddling themselves with a 350 kg behemoth, the formula retains its relevance. Twenty years on, the general opinion remains lenient. This Kawa retains its charm, its good-natured torque, and that disguised-Harley look that still brings a smile at the red light.
