Overview

Can a genuine touring motorcycle truly be born from a simple 650 parallel-twin? Kawasaki took the gamble with the Versys Tourer, an accessories-laden variant of its versatile trail bike. It’s no longer just a do-it-all machine; it's a considered proposition for those who want to put kilometers on the clock without breaking the bank. With its 64 horsepower drawn from a proven parallel-twin, the promise isn't extravagance, but efficiency.

Kawasaki Versys Tourer

On paper, the recipe is logical. Take the Versys base, already appreciated for its agility and supple engine, and equip it seriously. The Tourer kit provides the essentials: a top case and two side cases offering a decent volume, a taller screen and an adjustable deflector to keep the weather at bay, not to mention handguards and a tank protector. For a little over €8,300 at the time, it was a coherent offer against competitors like the V-Strom 650 ABS, often less well-equipped as standard.

But touring isn't just about luggage. The heart of the machine remains this 649 cm3 parallel-twin, delivering 61 Nm of torque. It is reliable, economical, and offers a nice progressive feel, perfect for eating up highway miles or winding through country roads. On the other hand, faced with a triple or a four-cylinder engine, it lacks reserve power for forceful overtaking and its acoustics remain very restrained. The chassis, with its 41 mm inverted fork and adjustable monoshock, is competent and handles the 206 kg fully fueled, even when loaded. The seat height of 845 mm may be intimidating, but once in the saddle, the low center of gravity makes the beast surprisingly maneuverable.

So, who rides this Versys Tourer? Clearly for the pragmatic globetrotter who prioritizes usage over showiness. It's the motorcycle of the self-sufficient traveler who wants to cover distance in comfort, with all their belongings, without going into debt. It will never have the flair or the nervousness of a tuned-up sportbike, but it does its job with a disarming mechanical honesty. Its flaw? Perhaps just this overly reasonable side, which lacks a spark of soul and character to transcend the travel experience. But as a reliable and well-thought-out discovery tool, it fulfills its mission without argument.
