Overview
The Versys 650 is a mainstay model in the range and on the market. Despite this, the spotlight is mainly on the maxi-trails, becoming increasingly powerful and technologically advanced. We are fascinated (or skeptical) by the Multistrada V4, S 1000 XR, Super Adventure... while the discreet mid-size trails sell the most (excluding the 1300 GS).
In this category, the battles aren't on the road but in terms of practicality, fun, ease of use, and price. And they pull more than you might think. The Kawa has been competing with the Tracer 7 and the 650 V-Strom for years. Moreover, the 660 Tiger Sport is shaking up the sector with its 3-cylinder engine. It is clearly time for an update.
So, evolution or new motorcycle? Facelift or complete overhaul? Looking at its face, modeled on the 1000, with its hooks under the nose and ZX-6R eyes, you sense that the Versys wants to show us something. New shoulders, a redesigned engine guard, small turn signals, a nose that sniffs the wind – these touches of freshness invite you to discover its new talents.
Looking around, you quickly feel a sense of déjà vu. Justifiably so. Once past the main fairing, you find a seat and rear identical to the previous Versys. You scrutinize, you search, you compare. Then you realize that the chassis and a large part of the body have also been carried over. No surprise, good or bad, should await the rider around every turn. This companion has always been pleasant, comfortable, and perfectly suited for versatile use. The opportunity to find the 41mm inverted fork with double adjustment (preload and rebound), the lateral shock absorber (preload via remote knob) and its discreet steel tubular Diamond frame. The brakes do their job, with two 300mm discs at the front with double-piston calipers and a 250mm disc at the rear. Neither aggressive nor sporty nor sluggish – what you would expect from the category.
This facelift is mainly an opportunity to update the on-board equipment (in addition to complying with regulations). We had known since mid-2020 that the twin-cylinder engine was ready for Euro5; it is now officially validated. No changes to the power values since the last engine upgrade, still rated at 67 horsepower and 6.2 kg-m. Therefore, there is nothing new to find in the bowels of the Versys III; it's in its neurons that things happen.
New face for the 650 Versys III - But rear, chassis and engine are identical to the II.
The traction control KTRC is installed, with two levels of settings and the possibility of being deactivated. The display changes generation by adopting the TFT panel of the Z 650 and Z 900 cousins. We won’t miss the old combined display. The 4.3-inch screen offers a pleasant, precise and intuitive display, common to the entire range. It also allows you to pair a phone via Bluetooth – hello to notifications during calls or text messages and to the functions of the Rideology app. The rider can have in their pocket the on-board data of the Versys, the recording of trips, the electronic settings and their transfer from the phone, the maintenance indications, the time of use of the motorcycle, riding stats, etc.
The sharp face of the Versys is topped with a new windshield, with 4 positions of adjustment over a range of approximately 80 mm. The general update also includes the grafting of LEDs at the level of the turn signals. It’s a real shame that Kawa didn’t install a USB socket as standard. Still no way to install a center stand and you still have to dig into the options to have heated grips. Fortunately, the practical luggage rack system is retained. The tank capacity preserves its 21 liters. This trail should easily allow you 350 km of riding before you start looking for a gas station.
The Versys 650 isn’t arriving alone. A series of additional packs are carried over to adapt the performance to uses. A few extra bills and you can leave with hand guards, cases, a top case and many effects choosing the Urban, Tourer, Tourer + and Grand Tourer variations.
So, new or not? The answer is simple. A small evolution for the 650 Versys. Kawasaki has remained very cautious, offering it an upgrade dictated by electronic trends, with a facelift to mark the change. At heart, it remains appreciable, preserving its qualities and thus reinforcing its place. Without upsetting the apple cart, which is what the brand has become accustomed to doing. The time is for caution, for everyone.
