Overview
The KX 85 is more than just a stepping stone between a mini bike and a 125. It’s also a more accessible machine in terms of both size and power for smaller riders. For 2026, Kawasaki engineers have adopted a completely new approach to this popular motocross machine, integrating a wide range of new components and technical evolutions. While the proven and reliable two-stroke engines are retained, the modifications made to the chassis, suspensions, and front end of the KX85 generate new performance opportunities.
The major novelty is the adoption of a new, larger diameter fork. This low-friction assembly, featuring a Kashima coating, now receives 43 mm diameter tubes, a rebound adjustment, and increased rigidity. In addition to the existing compression adjustment, the addition of a rebound adjuster allows for even more precise suspension.
At the front, improvements continue with a new 240 mm diameter brake disc, paired with the same caliper and master cylinder as those used on the KX250, offering superior braking power, increased durability, and better control. At the rear, a larger 220 mm diameter disc and a reduction in pedal play contribute to more precise braking. New Dunlop Geomax MX34 tires improve traction, braking adhesion, and cornering grip, while also providing better front-end feel.
At the rear, a new fully adjustable shock absorber is adopted, with a stem diameter increased from 12.5 mm to 14 mm, as well as a cylinder length increased from 380 mm to 390 mm, resulting in firmer damping. A revised linkage offers 305 mm of travel, a value comparable to those of the larger-displacement KX models.
The perimeter frame, already highly appreciated, also benefits from improvements, with an increased steering column length of 25 mm. This increased front rigidity provides more overall stability, while elements such as the handlebar, steering column, and rear sprocket are now made of aluminum, reducing weight compared to previous versions.
In terms of ergonomics, the rider benefits from extended adjustments thanks to a new upper fork brace offering two handlebar mounting positions and reversible risers, allowing for four possible positions: 10 mm forward, standard, 10 mm rearward, and 20 mm rearward. In addition, two possible heights are available thanks to spacers (standard and +5 mm), offering a wide choice of ERGO-FIT positions for a more personalized riding position.
With a new aggressive and angular front fender, a new front number plate, redesigned radiator louvers, as well as mounted ODI Lock-On grips on a new Renthal Fatbar handlebar, the rider also benefits from flatter footpegs, widened to 48 mm (previously 40 mm). These have a greater number of teeth for improved grip. Black rims and anodized green suspension settings reinforce the "factory racer" look, perfectly aligning these junior models with their adult-category counterparts.
