It takes a certain audacity to resurrect a name as storied as Indian. The Springfield brand dominated the global two-wheeler market in the first half of the last century, before fading into a long silence. This comeback, built around the Chief family, makes no attempt at discretion. The Classic, the entry-level model in this renaissance, carries more character than most customs of the moment.

Standing before it, the figure that strikes first is neither displacement nor power. It's the weight: 330 kilograms dry, with a seat height of 708 millimeters. A low, long, imposing machine that commands the road as though it has always owned it. The 45-degree V-twin of 1,720 cc does not compete with modern engines drenched in technical sophistication. Its 71 horsepower arrives at 4,500 rpm — a modest figure on paper — but the real argument lies elsewhere: 135 Nm of torque available from 2,400 rpm. This motorcycle doesn't pull, it pushes. The difference is fundamental on open roads, in fourth or fifth gear, without needing to work the six-speed gearbox any harder than necessary. The belt drive further amplifies that sensation of smooth, steady rolling, worlds apart from the agitation of sport bikes.
The engine itself deserves closer attention. Air-cooled, built along traditional lines with exposed rocker arms, prominent cooling fins, and worked chrome, it resembles a piece of fine craftsmanship more than a propulsion unit. Next to it, a contemporary liquid-cooled parallel-twin — even a capable one — looks plain. The specific output of around 40 horsepower per liter offers nothing exciting compared to rivals like the Yamaha V-Max or even a recent Harley-Davidson Softail. But that is not the contract made with the buyer. You ride a Chief Classic to glide, not to attack. The intended audience is the pure custom enthusiast, a lover of American cruising, unhurried and as sensitive to history as to mechanical sensation.
Where things become harder to swallow is the price. At 29,990 euros for the base model of the range, the figure is difficult to fully justify. The finish is careful, the build quality holds up, and the American artisanal label commands a premium. But at this price point, one is entitled to expect richer electronics and more generous standard equipment. The direct competition — notably Harley-Davidson with the Heritage Softail Classic — offers comparable performance for a similar budget, with the added advantage of a distribution network and accessories ecosystem in an entirely different league. Indian is rebuilding its legitimacy, which is admirable, but the premium for rarity and myth has its limits when the buyer writes the check.

The Chief Classic nonetheless remains a coherent proposition for those who seek precisely what it offers: a characterful motorcycle, visually striking, equipped with an engine that has something to say, and designed for long, unhurried rides rather than outright performance. The stated top speed of 150 km/h neatly summarizes its positioning. With its 21-liter tank, it can cover long distances without stopping. The question that remains is whether its buyer is willing to pay that much for what the brand was, as much as for what it is today.
