Overview
Imagine an impromptu bivouac somewhere between borders that no one really monitors, a rutted track leading up to a nameless pass on the map, and a Swedish motorcycle that doesn’t seem to mind such a setting. This is precisely the terrain for the Husqvarna Norden 901 Expedition, a beefed-up version of an already capable trail bike, refined for those who consider asphalt to be just one suggestion among others.

The base Norden’s recipe had character: an 889 cc parallel-twin extracted from the KTM parts bin, housed in a chrome-molybdene trellis frame that acts as a backbone, developing 105 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 100 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. Enough to swallow long stages at a sustained pace, the theoretical 200 km/h serving mainly as a sales point. But the base trail had its limits as soon as the road surface disappeared under the wheels. For the Expedition version, Husqvarna took the question seriously, starting with the foundations. WP Xplor suspension components replace the older Apex technology, with an inverted fork increasing in diameter from 43 to 48 mm and stroke increased to 240 mm at both ends. This places it in the higher end of the segment, ahead of the Africa Twin or the Ténéré 700 Extreme, in the same league as the KTM 890 Adventure R — logical, as they share the same parentage. The available settings are also expanded: preload, high and low-speed compression, rebound, everything is there to adapt the machine to the load and terrain.
This increase in stroke mechanically results in generous ground clearance and a different geometry, with a slightly extended wheelbase that stabilizes the whole thing on rough terrain. The 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoke wheels, shod with Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires, immediately set the tone: this is not a road-biased trail disguised as an adventure bike with a few stickers. The large aluminum engine guard seriously protects the lower engine and the sides of the 19-liter tank, which descend low on each side. A center stand is standard equipment, which changes life at the bivouac. The two waterproof side bags, totaling 36 liters, advantageously replace rigid cases for truly off-road use, lowering the center of gravity and reducing wind resistance.

Connected equipment follows the trend of the moment, with a module allowing a smartphone to be coupled for turn-by-turn navigation, call management, or music. Heated grips and seat, large windscreen, integrated GPS mount: the Expedition takes care of its rider on long winter or alpine distances. On the electronic assistance side, the 100 Nm is managed by cornering traction control, engine brake regulation, anti-slip control, and a bidirectional quickshifter. Four riding modes structure the aids: Street for open road use with the 105 horsepower available, Rain which limits power and hardens the assists, Offroad which allows rear slip and cuts off the lean angle sensors, and Explorer which allows each function to be manually parameterized. Braking entrusts two 320 mm discs to radial four-piston calipers at the front, with cornering ABS switchable off-road.

All this arsenal weighs on the bill: 214.5 kg dry weight, and more when loaded, compared to approximately 204 kg for the standard version. This is the price to pay for such an autonomous machine. The selling price, for its part, is set at 16,449 euros at launch in 2023, which positions the Husqvarna Norden 901 Expedition clearly above the base Norden and in the premium segment of adventure trails. For those looking for a used Husqvarna Norden 901 Expedition on the used market, the first examples are beginning to circulate at significantly lower prices, which represents an interesting entry point into the range. The target customer is not the beginner who samples the Sunday bike, but the experienced grand traveler, the one who plans his vacations with a paper map as a last resort and a list of water points as the only constraint. A serious machine, for an assumed use.
