Overview

Since 2025, a few technical improvements have been added to the Husqvarna Hræsvelg. Traction control can be parameterized in 10 levels (in Explorer Riding Mode); the equipment gains a USB-C port, a new hazard light, and redesigned mirrors; a modified exhaust allows for Euro5+ compliance (power values are unaffected). A subtle update for a machine full of assurance. One that readily shares it with its rider.

It’s when you have muddy boots, snow in your nose, a squirrel stuck in your back, and grass in the headlight that you say to yourself: “we’re still having fun…. Almost a shame to arrive at the village so quickly.” Returning beat-up or fresh as fish from a fjord, it doesn’t matter.

The village in question could be 2 km or 200 km away, it would be the same for the crew. The desire is there, and that’s the kind of trip the new Norden 901 Expedition wants to imagine. The ends of the earth are trendy!

We are dealing with a much bolder version of the Husqvarna trail bike. The Norden immediately surprised the world; with its very “Scandinavian” design but also with its marked orientation towards adventure. Unless this machine starts to refuse to point its nose because the road trip seems a bit too engaging. How to do it then? To tinker with it with a beaver? To infuse it with Rally FR 450 powder? No, let Husqy do its thing.

To achieve the “Expedition” version, it was first necessary to focus on the suspensions. First step, to raise them to broaden the investigation potential. The travel now reaches 240 mm. A significant value and among the highest in the segment, in line with the Aprilia 660 Tuareg, KTM 890 Adventure R (its cousin), and Triumph Tiger 900 Rally - even superior to those of the Africa Twin and the new 700 Ténéré Extreme. Not only does it gain ground clearance and suspension travel, the Norden Expé’ changes its entire fork. The tubes go from 43 mm to 48 mm in diameter – a robust fork. The entire suspension technology is no longer APEX but XPLOR. This allows, among other things, more adjustment possibilities. At the front, you gain preload in addition to the compression / rebound duo present on the Norden. The shock absorber had rebound and preload; it gains high and low speed compression adjustments.

New suspensions, a slightly increased wheelbase, and the Norden Expedition presents a chassis of another scale. It also wants to pamper its rider with a new level of comfort. To avoid frost on the helmet, the front receives a larger windshield. While some parts of the body will be accommodated by heated grips and a heated seat. Then, it’s better to plan for a pull-over, a thermos of tea, a slice of lard, a sleeping bag, and a grease gun. How do you fit all that? The Husqvarna has grafted two large waterproof bags on its hips, with a total capacity of 36 liters. That’s different from luggage racks.

The 901 Expedition also took care of its belly. Look at this large aluminum protection plate, as wide as a refrigerator. Enough to reassure the lower engine and the tank cheeks (yes, the fuel compartments descend very low on the sides on Adventure / Norden bikes). A center stand is also added, as well as a connectivity module to pair your smartphone. With the house app, the rider can download maps, have turn-by-turn navigation+, manage calls, music, volume, etc etc. A GPS mount is there to fix an electronic co-pilot.

More rugged, the Expedition relies on the same frame and the same engine as the standard Norden. We thus have pure KTM material underneath, with a chrome-molybdenum trellis frame supported by an aluminum swingarm. The spoked wheels clearly show their pretension, with Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires and truly trail dimensions (90-90 / 21 and 150/70 / 18) - not SUV tires as you see at every corner.

All this equipment inevitably generates weight. You will have to deal with 10 kilos more, not counting what you will pack in the luggage. To go with the compass, two bowls stir to extract 105 horsepower from the 889 cm3. Under the throttle command, there will be the response of 10.2 mkg accompanied by active traction control in curves, engine braking regulation, several engine reactivity and power, and an anti-wheeling system. A quickshifter is also present, as well as a cruise control. To stop, 320 mm discs are bitten by J.Juan radial calipers with 4 pistons. ABS wakes up, with cornering function and the possibility of being deactivated. This is done in the Riding Modes. There are 4: the 3 that the Norden has (Street – Rain – Offroad) + the Explorer Mode that is found here as standard. The latter allows you to completely parameterize the functions available.

These 4 Riding Modes, let’s briefly see how they behave: -Street: A direct response to the throttle, all the horses, a Traction Control calibrated for normal road (bitumen, potholes, gravel, puddles, speed bumps,…) and a RoadABS not too intrusive. -Rain: less horses, a softer response to the accelerator command, a traction control and anABS well sensitive. -Offroad: A moderate response to the accelerator, a permissive traction control to let the rear wheel slip a little, anABS adjusted for off-road and more anti-wheeling. In this mode, the sensitivity of the assistance to the lean angle is cut. -Explorer: allows you to personalize your Riding Mode, by activating, deactivating, adjusting all the functions.

So, where does this Expedition start and where does it go? For some, from the alley to the end of imagination; for others, from forest to forest, even without roads. The Norden 901 aims further, more equipped, more intrepid… more trendy too!?
