Overview
Is this still a Sportster if you remove its legendary peanut tank? That was the question asked by purists in 2004, when Harley-Davidson revamped its lineup and equipped the XL 883 Custom with a 17.4-liter tank. For the average person, this evolution is a blessing, extending range to around 300 km, a far more tangible argument than aesthetic nostalgia. With its high handlebars, 21-inch front wheel, and forward controls, this Custom fully embraces its status as an entry-level chopper, a motorcycle that appeals to the eye even before turning the key.

Once in the saddle, the picture is unequivocal. Arms outstretched, feet forward, the low 67 cm seat, you are seated as in an armchair, at least if you are taller than 1.75 m. For more modest builds, the position becomes a gymnastics routine, requiring you to extend your leg to reach the footpegs and making the gear and rear brake controls less intuitive. This is the price to pay for this characteristic style. The start-up of the Evolution 883 cm3 V-twin is a ritual, and its deep rumble is the perfect soundtrack for this urban ride or a trip on a departmental road.
But don't expect electrifying performance. With 53 horsepower and 69 Nm of torque, the beast is placid. It even pulls frankly with two people, the passenger sacrificed on the altar of looks with a minimalist seat and short shocks that transform every road imperfection into a searing memory. The handling, dictated by the extreme geometry and the large front wheel, is in keeping with its intentions: it aims for relaxation, not precise piloting. You don't look for tight turns, you let yourself be carried away by the torque available from low revs, in a spirit of relaxed cruising.
So, who is this machine for? For the novice seduced by the Harley aura, willing to accept its dynamic limitations and its basic comfort in exchange for timeless style and a unique sensation. At nearly 9000 euros new in 2005, it represented the most accessible entry point into the Milwaukee custom world, a "mini Softail" with a well-tempered character. It wasn't the most agile, the most powerful, or the most comfortable, but it offered, for those who accepted its mindset, a genuine dose of that American freedom. A motorcycle of mood rather than performance, and that was precisely what made its charm.
