Overview
Is this still a Sportster if you remove its iconic peanut tank? That’s the question that must have plagued purists when Harley-Davidson released this XL 883 C, alias "Custom." With its 17-liter tank, it turns its back on the icon to gain range, promising nearly 300 km of autonomy. A practical compromise, but one that sounds like a small betrayal for the guardians of the temple. The rest, however, loudly proclaims its belonging to the custom world: the 21-inch front wheel, the high handlebars, the low seat at 71 cm, and these forward controls that stretch you out on the beast like on a boulevard cruiser. Visually, it's a mini-chopper that has swallowed a large tank, a silhouette that is immediately appealing.

But once in the saddle, the compromise is felt. The riding position, feet forward and arms outstretched, is a moving icon for medium and tall builds. For pilots under one meter sixty, it’s another story: you often have to wriggle to reach the footpegs, and the gear and rear brake controls become a gymnastics routine. The Evolution 883 engine, for its part, does not claim to pulverize records. With its 53 horsepower and torque of 67.7 Nm available low in the rev range, it runs on sensations more than on pure performance. The deep sound, the crisp response to throttle opening, all contribute to this immediate and characteristic pleasure. It's an engine to be savored, not rushed, and which clearly runs out of breath when you add a passenger.
Because that's where the problem lies. Harley presents this Custom as a two-seater, but it's a thinly veiled lie. The rear seat is a breadboard and the rear shocks, with just 104 mm of travel, will transmit every bump in the road directly to the spine of your passenger. Pretending to ride two-up on this base is cruelty. The handling, dictated by the large front wheel and relaxed geometry, is in the image of its philosophy: it requires anticipation, loves straight lines, and forgives hasty corner entries little. It's a motorcycle for cruising, not for chasing the apex.
So, who is it for? For those who dream of a first Harley with a distinctive custom look, without breaking the bank on a Softail. For a little less than €9,000 (in 2009), it offered this ticket of entry into the myth, with the sound, the attitude, and this tank that finally allowed you to leave gas stations. It's a machine of simple and effective emotions, a toy for sunny weekend rides solo. A beginner seduced by the aesthetics can get acquainted with it, but he will have to compromise with its limitations. In short, the 883 Custom is an imperfect Harley-Davidson, sometimes uncomfortable, but terribly charismatic. It will remind you on every ride that you are not riding on a motorcycle like any other, and for many, that is worth all the compromises in the world.
