Overview
The Deluxe is a bit of a indulgence in the Softail range. A star of leisure in the custom port, fully embracing the nostalgic feel it conveys. Now that the Fat Boy has been somewhat liberated, the field is clear to seduce all lovers of classic cruisers. Its lines remain timeless, with all the arguments to transport you to the middle of the century. Beautiful chrome everywhere, whitewall tires, spoked wheels, fenders as big as umbrellas, a flowing line and an engine that explodes with presence.
Speaking of this engine. This is one of the major recent evolutions of this Softail. Definitely turning the page on the Twin Cam, Harley has installed the Milwaukee Eight in the Deluxe. More than just a new block, the M8 propels Harley to a higher dimension. Each cylinder is entitled to 4 valves and 2 spark plugs, more room to express itself, and unwanted idle vibrations are reduced to a minimum. Displacement climbs to 1745 cm3, or 107 ci in American terminology. Cleaner, more powerful, more torquey, pleasant to use as one would expect from a MoCo machine, the M8 has a perfect place in the Deluxe.
A push of the starter to make the block tremble and the road becomes a whirl of emotions. Harley has done what is necessary so that the driver no longer has to suffer but leads the dance on the handlebars. Because all Softail models have seen their frame completely reworked. A strong return of experience and opinions, a major CAD effort, and a severe dose of technique result in a lighter, stiffer and more efficient frame. When weighed, this Deluxe has lost no less than 17 kilos compared to the old one. Its suspension is also completely revised. More rigorous, its rear suspension uses a new swingarm as well as a single shock absorber under the seat instead of the two shocks under the chassis – while preserving the Hardtail appearance. The double valve fork comes from the Touring models and promises to be much more effective. Thus revised, the Deluxe should seriously gain in handling, stability and agility. The brand announces more lean angles.
The technical underpinnings have taken a significant leap forward. Increasingly formidable competition has led the manufacturer to give more ambition to its range. And yet, from the outside, it seems insensitive to ersatz of fashion and progress. Really? From a classic appearance, the headlight ramp has nevertheless completely shifted into the 21st century. It seems to have been borrowed from the hood of a Plymouth Fury, the turn signal support bar is both vintage and modern. A beautiful job by the designers. The optics are full of LEDs, and the central block features a striking circular light signature. A front end that reconciles defenders of yesterday and tech enthusiasts of today.
In the Softail range, the Deluxe will be the one that makes you tip over the most in the classic style. Its evolution is significant, while its silhouette continues to charm. A huge piece of cream and flavor, to be enjoyed without haste.
