The Nightster name resonates as a symbol of bravery within the Harley catalog, and its resurrection in 2026 on a completely new platform is a well-calculated move. Milwaukee isn’t pulling an old model out of the closet, but recycling a cult identity onto modern mechanics. The objective is clear: to seduce the novice attracted to the custom style, but intimidated by the mass and the prices of the larger models, while also offering a more accessible entry point to the brand.

Harley-Davidson RH 975 Nightster

Beneath this retro facade lies a resolutely modern motorcycle, built around the Revolution Max 975T. This 60° V-twin, liquid-cooled engine is a slimmed-down version of the 1250T that equips the Sportster S. With 89 horsepower at 7500 rpm and 95 Nm of torque at 5750 rpm, it doesn’t have the low-end brutality of a large air-cooled twin, but it revs with surprising liveliness for a Harley. The character is more touring-oriented than burly, a philosophy confirmed by the chassis where the engine plays a structural role. All this for an announced weight of 211 kg, a figure that, if verified on the scale, would make it a relatively maneuverable motorcycle in its category.

On paper, the technical specifications make sense. The Showa 41 mm fork, the Brembo braking system with its radial monoblock caliper at the front, the ABS, the traction control, and the three riding modes make it a much more accomplished machine than the older Sportster models. A seat height of 705 mm and specific tires (100/90-19 at the front, 150/80-16 at the rear) promise immediate accessibility. This is where Harley hits the mark: the 2026 Nightster is the ideal candidate for an A2 license in its restricted version, and a carefree companion for the daily rider or the Sunday aesthete.

However, the picture isn’t perfect. The 11.7-liter tank is just enough for long trips, and the style, although successful in its retro-minimalist genre, loses some soul in exchange for cleanliness. The smooth cylinders of the liquid-cooled engine will never have the raw charm of finned cylinder heads. And then there’s the price. At €11,390, it’s far from the appeal of less than €10,000 of the original 2007 Nightster. The competition, particularly from Japanese or European mid-size roadsters, often offers more performance for less money. But let’s admit it, you don’t buy a Harley for the horsepower/euro ratio.

Ultimately, this new Nightster is an intelligent compromise machine. It modernizes the Sportster spirit without betraying it, offering a more versatile and accessible ride. It accurately targets the motorcyclist seeking an easy-to-live-with first custom, the elegant urbanite, or even the older rider who wants something new without too much of a shock. It’s not the most powerful, nor the most radical, but it deserves to exist and makes the Bar & Shield emblem a little more affordable. Remains to be seen if, once in the saddle, the character of this modern V-twin and the riding pleasure will live up to the myth it carries.
