Overview

Do you remember the days when a Harley simply was a motorcycle, without frills, without excuses? The 2008 Softail Cross Bones hasn’t forgotten. It’s an assumed return to basics, a snub to overly polished customs, a machine that smells of oil, raw metal, and road dust. Milwaukee brought out the torch for this limited series, and the result borders on the archetype of a factory bobber.

Harley-Davidson FLSTSB Softail Cross Bones

From the first glance, the tone is set. The parallelogram Springer fork, black and massive, imposes an immediate retro style. It supports a high Ape-Hanger handlebar that draws a riding position that is both relaxed and dominant, perfect for long straightaways but which can quickly become a torment in the city. The single headlight, the solo seat suspended on two springs, and the 200 mm rear tire complete a picture of rugged authenticity. It’s custom at heart, with no compromises on old-school aesthetics.

But beneath this pirate look lies a well-known engine. The Twin Cam 96B with 1573 cm3 delivers 71 horsepower, a modest power that is clearly not the main argument. Where it hits hard is with its 115 Nm of torque available from 3100 rpm, a wave of traction that propels the 334 kg all fueled with nonchalant American ease. The belt drive is silent and clean, in line with the cruiser spirit. On the other hand, the braking system, with its single disc at the front, requires anticipation at every moment. Stopping this mass with a single caliper is an act of faith that recalls that safety was not the number one priority in the specifications.

Who is made for this Cross Bones? Certainly not a beginner, intimidated by its weight and placid but heavy reactions. Nor a track rider in search of performance. No, this Harley is for the purist, the globetrotter who travels kilometers for the pleasure of riding it, for the one who seeks a strong personality and a unique visual presence. Faced with a more versatile and responsive Japanese cruiser, it loses on all technical scores. But it wins on a much more subjective ground: that of emotion and style. It is not made to be the best, but to be noticed and loved for what it is, a raw and authentic collector's item.
