Overview
Imagine a metal silhouette that has defined the aesthetics of a brand, and perhaps even a culture. It’s not the one displayed in Terminator 2, where the cyborg’s screen shows a ghost bike. Schwarzenegger’s mount was a 1991 Harley-Davidson FLSTF Fat Boy, a model that, from its appearance, captured the collective imagination. The 2009 version we are scrutinizing here is the evolution of this icon, tasked with carrying a colossal heritage without being crushed by its own weight.

On paper, the figures speak of a world of immense proportions. A Twin Cam 96 engine of 1584 cc delivering 73 horsepower, but above all a torque of 120 Nm at only 3300 rpm. This means that as soon as you release the clutch, the mass of 330 kg fully fueled begins to move with a deafening authority. The announced top speed of 160 km/h is almost an anecdote. This engine is not made for acrobatics, but to deploy a presence, to vibrate the asphalt and the rider with this unique sound signature. The Softail frame, with its illusion of rigidity, and the low seat at 645 mm create this inimitable posture, low and dominant.
Riding this machine is a permanent negotiation. The wide handlebar offers a comfortable lever, and the V2 responds with a generosity of torque that makes starts and accelerations uninhibited. But the weight and geometry impose their laws. The suspensions, particularly the rear one hidden, have been reworked since the first Softail to offer a little more control over road imperfections. The brakes, a single disc at the front with four pistons and one at the rear with two, are correct for the size, but they require anticipation. The real challenge is in the curves. The wheelbase of 1635 mm and the 200 mm wide rear tire are not friends with agility. The wide footpegs will quickly serve as bumpers if you are looking for lean angle. It is a straight-line bike, of majestic pose, of journeys where style and sensation take precedence over the stated performance.
Compared to its competitors in the cruiser world, like some Yamaha Star or Honda Shadow, the Fat Boy doesn’t play in the same league. It doesn’t aim for accessibility or frugality. Its price, around 20,000 euros at the time, and its pure Harley gasoline, position it as a desirable object for those who want authenticity, history, and status. It is made for the globetrotter who travels kilometers in a straight line, for the aesthete who collects chrome, for the one who wants to feel the legend of Milwaukee in his hands. It is a machine that demands adaptation from its rider: accepting its dynamic limitations to embrace its monumental character. It is not fast, it is not agile, but it is, undeniably, a presence. A Fat Boy, especially one that has evolved since the 1991 model, remains a statement more than a simple vehicle.
