Overview

What does a two-wheeled icon look like? For many, the answer takes the massive and timeless form of this Harley-Davidson FLSTF Fat Boy. Launched in the early 1990s, it froze a certain idea of American power, raw and unadorned, in aluminum and chrome. Its legend extends far beyond the roads, since unlike what the heads-up display of the Terminator shows, the motorcycle featured in the film is actually a Harley-Davidson FLSTF Fat Boy from 1991. A pop-culture consecration that has etched its particular profile into the collective imagination.

Harley-Davidson FLSTF Fat Boy

On paper, this 2008 version seems familiar, but it has evolved. The heart of the beast is now the Twin Cam 96 V-Twin engine with a displacement of 1573 cm3. The figures are eloquent: 73 horsepower at 5300 rpm, but above all a torque of 123.4 Nm available from 3000 rpm. This generosity at low speeds is the very essence of the cruiser, propelling its 324 kg fully fueled with the nonchalance of an ocean liner. The announced consumption of 4.7L/100km is almost a joke in the face of such a display of quiet strength. The Softail frame, with its swingarm and hidden shock absorbers, maintains the illusion of a rigid motorcycle while offering correct suspension travel, while the new 200 mm wide rear tire completes the “Boy’s” decidedly “Fat” character.

Riding a Fat Boy means accepting a pact. In exchange for an incomparable stage presence and a seat height of 69.8 cm that flatters the ego, one renounces any sporting ambitions. The wide handlebar offers easy control at low speeds and in a straight line, but the generous footpegs remind you of your place as soon as you dare to approach a turn with a bit of enthusiasm. The brakes, with their simple 292 mm disc at the front and rear, are sufficient for relaxed riding, but require anticipation given the weight of the machine. It is a machine made for long, straight roads, city streets where it commands respect, and parking lots where it instantly becomes the center of attention.

Compared to its Japanese rivals of the time, such as a Honda VTX 1800 or a Yamaha V-Max, the 2008 Fat Boy does not play in the same league in terms of pure performance or braking. It is also not the most maneuverable of cruisers. But it sells a dream, an aesthetic and a status that its competitors cannot match. At more than 20,000 euros new, one does not buy a simple motorcycle, one acquires a piece of motorized mythology. It is aimed at the rider who prioritizes attitude and sensation over the technical specifications, the one for whom the characteristic sound of the V-Twin and the looks of passersby are an integral part of the journey. It is a motorcycle that is lived more than it is ridden, a mobile sculpture that, despite its flaws, retains an absolutely irresistible charm for those who have understood its codes.
