Overview

Can one still speak of a custom motorcycle when it is designed to devour thousands of kilometers of asphalt? That is the bold bet of the Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail Classic, a machine that balances retro attitude with road ambitions. With its 1950s boat look, its removable windshield, and studded leather saddlebags, it displays a typically Harley aesthetic, a blend of nostalgia and presence that does not go unnoticed. It also shares a strong kinship with the Fat Boy, particularly this Softail frame that simulates a rigid line while concealing shock absorbers under the engine.

Harley-Davidson FLSTCI Heritage Softail Classic

The real progress for 2004 lies under the fuel tank, with the arrival of the Twin Cam 88 B. This 1450 cm3 V2 is not a revolution in terms of raw figures: 63 horsepower, which is modest on paper. But it is its torque of 102 Nm, available from 3500 rpm, that makes all the difference. It offers a smooth and authoritative surge, ideal for long, straight roads. Above all, Harley has finally equipped this engine with a balance shaft. Vibrations, once an obligatory signature of the brand, are now contained to an acceptable level. Purists will cry sacrilege, but for the modern touring rider, it is a blessing.

With its 333 kg all fueled up and a seat 65 cm from the ground, the Heritage imposes a placid ride. One does not handle it, one directs it with a certain solemnity. The braking, with its two discs gripped by four-piston calipers, is a clear improvement over older models, even if it lags behind the Japanese competition. The 19-liter fuel tank and relaxed riding position allow for serious stages without fatigue. This is its playground: the peaceful national road, the holiday route, the secondary itinerary. It does not like to be jostled and its limited-travel suspension quickly reminds you of it in tight corners.

Who is it for? For those seeking less performance than experience, for the motorcyclist for whom the journey is a ritual more than a simple translation. For a little over 21000 euros at the time, it offered a ticket of entry into the world of American touring bikes, with an unmatched style. Faced with a Honda VTX 1800, much more lively, or a Yamaha Road Star, more raw, the Heritage Softail Classic plays the card of elegance and relative comfort. It is not perfect, it is slow, heavy, and expensive. But it possesses that outdated charm and that ability to transform a simple journey into a small epic, which, for many, is worth all the horsepower in the world.
