Overview
The custom motorcycle is often seen as a showpiece, gleaming but not eager to devour asphalt. The 2006 Heritage Softail Classic, however, has not forgotten its road-going DNA. With its studded leather saddlebags and removable windscreen, it has no qualms about its retro look, but it’s under the hood that the evolution is noticeable. The famous Twin Cam 88 B is the centerpiece. Milwaukee has finally yielded on one point: vibrations. The addition of a balance shaft has calmed the characteristic tremor, much to the dismay of purists perhaps, but to the great relief of your wrists and spine on long distances.

With 115 Nm of torque available from 3000 rpm, this engine doesn’t need to rev high to show its strength. It pulls with quiet authority, propelling its 340 kilograms all fueled up without haste. The power of 63 horsepower may make a sportbike rider smile, but here, it’s the sensation that takes precedence. It delivers a reassuring surge, even if the speedometer tops out around 160 km/h. Fuel consumption, however, remains reasonable for such a displacement, flirting with 5.2 liters per hundred kilometers.
Comfort is the other major asset of this Softail. The low seat, 65 cm from the ground, is an invitation to travel for riders of average build. The chassis, with its hidden shock absorbers, maintains the “hardtail” aesthetic while offering a suspension worthy of the name. We are far from the rigid frame of the older models. Even the braking, often the weak point of Harley-Davidsons of the era, has gained bite with four-piston calipers. It’s not radial braking, but it’s effective and proportionate to the beast’s serene spirit.
Who is this machine for? For the traveler who seeks authenticity without excessive compromises. It’s a motorcycle for covering kilometers in a relaxed position, the wind deflected by the windscreen, your belongings stored in the saddlebags. It doesn’t compete with a Gold Wing on the highway, but it offers a more substantial, more sensory experience. Its price, at the time, placed it in the high-end segment of customs. Today, it represents a solid and comfortable entry point into the world of large American touring bikes, for those who want character without the ostentation of an oversized custom. It’s a Harley that knows it’s a Harley, but has decided to be a little more civilized.
