Overview
Who says American road trip inevitably means a massive silhouette with a large V-twin at its heart and saddlebags that seem cut to cross a continent. In 2003, the Electra Glide Standard from Harley-Davidson embodies this promise, but with a more stripped-down approach than its big sister, the Ultra Classic. It's the version lightened in equipment, not in presence, for those who want the essence of travel without sometimes superfluous extravagance.

With its Twin Cam 88 engine of 1450 cm3, the beast displays figures that will make a sports enthusiast smile but make a touring rider shiver: 67 horsepower and 110 Nm of torque, available from 3100 rpm. That's where the salt of this mechanics lies. It doesn't rush, it pushes, with a generosity in the low revs that makes you forget its official weight of 360 kg fully fueled. On the highway, it swallows the kilometers with a vibrational nonchalance that is its signature, although its top speed capped around 160 km/h recalls that urgency is not its credo. Consumption associated with a 18.8-liter tank imposes regular stops, but it is also the rhythm imposed by this type of machine.
Just talking about this size. The wheelbase of nearly a meter sixty and the ground clearance reduced to 130 mm transform tight roundabouts into approach maneuvers. The handling is that of a liner, you have to anticipate it and accept to play your hips to make it pivot. Once launched, it stabilizes and offers a suspension comfort worthy of the great outdoors. The front dual-disc braking, correct for the time, however requires a firm grip to effectively slow down this mass.
Who is this machine for? Clearly for the pure and hard touring rider, for whom the journey is a liturgy and not a race. For a little more than 18,000 euros at the time, you bought less electronic equipment than character. Faced with a more technological and fluid Gold Wing, the Electra Glide Standard plays the card of rough authenticity, vibrations and timeless style. It makes no concessions to modernity, and that is precisely what its followers are looking for: a machine that imposes its tempo, that of the open road and the fat rumble of its twin cylinder. A flaw? Its lack of nervousness in urban areas and a stinginess in equipment that can deter. An absolute quality? This unique feeling of piloting a piece of history, imperfect and terribly endearing.
