Overview

What does a Harley-Davidson look like in the collective imagination? For many, it's precisely this silhouette, that of the Electra Glide. An institution on two wheels, born in 1965 and which, in 2002, offered this Standard version, an interesting gamble. We remain in the touring category, with a weight announced at 360 kilograms with full tanks, but the manufacturer chose to strip down the Ultra Classic, the ultimate flagship, to offer a lighter version for the wallet. And the word is weak: at nearly 18,500 euros at the time, the bill remains salty, but it avoids several thousand euros of supplement compared to its highly equipped big sister.

Harley-Davidson FLHT Electra Glide Standard

The exercise is visual. You immediately recognize the family with the triple headlight, the wide fork and the imposing rigid saddlebags. But the top case has disappeared, the leg deflectors too, and the protections are more discreet. As a result, the line actually appears more dynamic, less stocky. Don't be fooled, we are still talking about a behemoth with a wheelbase of 1612 mm. Maneuverability in town is a matter of logistics, parking requires military planning, and the 693 mm seat height does not compensate for the feeling of mounting a rolling piece of furniture. This is the price to pay for the aura.

Under the 18.9-liter tank beats the heart of the beast, the famous Twin Cam 88 of 1450 cm3. The figures, 67 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 110 Nm of torque from 3100 rpm, seem modest compared to the 360 kg to move. And that's the case. The acceleration is not lightning fast, and the maximum speed is around 160 km/h. But the magic happens elsewhere. This engine is an indefatigable tractor, which delivers its fat power and characteristic vibrations with the regularity of a metronome. It is this cadence, this torque always present, that creates the charm and the efficiency on long distances. The five-speed gearbox and the belt drive contribute to this feeling of serene robustness.

So, for whom? Clearly not for a beginner, nor for a track rider in search of thrills. The 2002 Electra Glide Standard is aimed at the pure and hard road warrior, at the one for whom the journey is a ritual and the motorcycle an element of this ceremony. It is a machine for covering long straight lines or winding roads at a measured pace, wrapped in a certain comfort despite fairly basic suspensions. It makes concessions on equipment to get closer to an audience that wants the essence of the Glide without the integral pomp. A courageous choice, which preserves the soul but requires the rider to accept its obvious physical limitations. An icon, yes, but an icon that must be earned.
