Overview
Anyone who says Harley-Davidson inevitably says Electra Glide. It's an obvious certainty, a mechanical law as immutable as the V-twin itself. Launched in 1965, this two-wheeled legend has crossed the decades without ever truly betraying itself, evolving into increasingly loaded models. In 2006, facing the Ultra Classic and its profuse equipment, the FLHT Standard plays the card of essentials. A strategy that stands out in the world of American touring, where excess is often the rule.

The principle is simple: keep the soul, lighten the envelope. Exit the monumental top case, the large leg deflectors, and part of the crash bars. Remaining are the iconic triple headlight, the rigid saddlebags, and this sedan-like silhouette that commands respect. With a wet weight approaching 360 kg, the size remains the first data to digest. Maneuverability in the city is a logistical challenge, and parking requires planning worthy of a port maneuver. But that's the price to pay for this cruise ship comfort, supported by a low seat at 69 cm and pneumatic suspension that swallows asphalt without a murmur.
Under the nearly 19-liter tank beats the heart of the beast: the Twin Cam 88 of 1442 cm³. The figures make you smile today: just 67 horsepower for a torque of 116 Nm. A modest power that sometimes struggles to awaken this mass, limiting the top speed to 160 km/h. But devouring the kilometers on this Harley has nothing to do with a time trial. The pleasure lies elsewhere, in this torque accessible from 3500 rpm, in this supple propulsion, and this deep rumble that becomes a soothing vibration over long distances. Belt drive and the five-speed gearbox contribute to this serenity, for a reasonable consumption of around 5.5 L/100 km.
Who is this Electra Glide Standard for? Certainly not for the hurried rider or the novice intimidated by its size. It is the ideal mount of the pure Harley touring rider, the one who travels slowly but surely, and who prefers to invest in gasoline and country roads rather than gadgets. Its entry price, more accessible than that of the Ultra Classic, opens the doors to authentic touring. It proves that you can embody the spirit of American travel without necessarily opting for the over-equipped model. A lesson in priorities in a world of one-upmanship.
