Overview
Who can still afford the luxury of absolute authenticity, a machine that doesn’t seek to please, but simply to be what it is? In 2001, the Electra Glide Standard answered this question with the nonchalance of a veteran who knows his worth. It wasn't the most ostentatious of the Touring range, far from it. Faced with the Ultra Classic and its arsenal of comfort, the Standard made the opposite choice: to declutter the philosophy, not betray it. Farewell the monumental top case and its senator's seat, farewell the large leg deflectors. We kept the essentials: the imperial triple headlight, the rigid saddlebags, and this ship-like silhouette refined just enough to appear a bit more dynamic. A relative vanity when weighing in at 360 kg with pockets full.

Under the 19-liter tank, the heart beats to the rhythm of the Twin Cam 88, a 1450 cm3 V-twin engine. The figures, 67 horsepower and 106 Nm of torque, seem derisory in the face of the mass. And that's the case. You have to play with the five-speed gearbox, seek that torque available from 3300 rpm, and accept that overtaking on national roads is planned like a diplomatic maneuver. Top speed flirts with 160 km/h, but that's not where its kingdom lies. Its magic operates between 90 and 110 km/h, where the engine vibrates, growls, and distills a sensation of infinite propulsion, a feeling of imperturbable cruising that few Japanese or European competitors, more fluid and technical, manage to reproduce on an emotional level.
Because it's about emotion, because rational handling is not on the agenda. The double cradle frame, the 41 mm fork, and the pneumatic shock absorbers manage the weight with dignity, but agility is not the subject. It's about guiding, with a certain predictable heaviness, this steel monument. The front double disc brake of 292 mm does its job seriously, without flamboyance. The seat height of 69 cm is accessible, but it's at a standstill that things get tough: at 360 kg, roadside stops are not improvised.
So, for whom is this machine? For the hard-core globetrotter, the aesthete of slow travel, the one who prefers the conversation of the big twin to sterile performance. At 18,500 euros at the time, it positioned itself as a less expensive entry point into the world of large touring Harleys. It demanded concessions – reduced equipment, no electronics – but offered in return a raw, unfiltered experience. It's a motorcycle that doesn't cheat. It's heavy, slow by modern standards, and vibrant. But for those who accept its pact, it becomes a travel companion with an unparalleled character, a lesson in priorities where the journey counts more than the destination. An authentic museum piece that rolls.
