Overview
Can one still speak of a motorcycle when evoking this machine? Weighing in at 431 kg fully fueled, with its oversized Batwing fairing and 22-liter tank, the 2017 CVO 1870 Limited is more of a land yacht, an embodied state of mind. Harley-Davidson has pushed the Touring concept to its ultimate limits here, with a price that approaches 42,000 euros. One is no longer in the realm of simple transportation, but in that of ritualized travel, where every detail must celebrate the road.

The heart of this imposing machine is its new Milwaukee Eight 114, an 1868 cm³ V-twin engine that marks a technological shift for the brand. With 102 horsepower and a torque of 164.8 Nm from 3250 rpm, it offers considerable punch, especially compared to previous Twin Cam engines. The difference is immediately felt: acceleration is more direct, the response more lively, without sacrificing the characteristic rumble that makes purists shiver. The Assist & Slip clutch reduces lever effort, and the balance system attenuates vibrations at idle, but retains the organic palpitation that remains the DNA of every Harley. On paper, it’s a notable improvement, but on the road, it’s primarily an assurance of tranquility for long hours of riding.
The chassis has also been seriously revised. The Showa SDBV telescopic fork and rear shock absorbers with simplified hydraulic adjustment offer more stable behavior and less dependence on adjustment tools. For a motorcycle that aims for autonomy over hundreds of kilometers, this is a gain in comfort and reliability. The braking system, with its double 300 mm discs and four-piston calipers, is sufficient to control this mass, even if it remains far from the responsiveness of a European radial system. It is effective, predictable, and adapted to the philosophy of the machine: one brakes with anticipation, as one drives a boat.
The equipment is, unsurprisingly, exhaustive. The BOOM! 6.5 GT multimedia station with integrated GPS, the touchscreen, the cruise control, the heated grips, the separately controllable heated seat, the improved saddlebags and top case, the ABS coupled with the Reflex system… everything is there so that the rider and passenger lack nothing. The hand-applied Thunderblade paint, the Contrast Chrome Slicer chrome wheels, the Airflow details extracted from the accessories catalog, all contribute to creating an exceptional object. This level of finish rivals that of luxury cars, for an audience that wants as much prestige as travel capacity.
Ultimately, this CVO Limited is not a motorcycle for everyone. It requires a significant budget, an appetite for controlled weight, and a vision of travel where comfort takes precedence over nervousness. Compared to a BMW K 1600 GTL or a Honda Gold Wing, it remains more archaic mechanically, but it offers that aura, that physical and sonic presence that are the main reasons for purchase. It is the choice of the irrational enthusiast, the globetrotter who wants to transform every journey into an event. For those who accept its dynamic limitations and its staggering price, it offers a unique road experience, both anachronistic and deeply seductive.
