Overview
Picture a steel-and-chrome ocean liner perched on two wheels, ready to swallow the horizon without blinking. That is what the 2019 Ultra Limited FLHTK delivers, a machine that owns its 416 kilos fully loaded and apologizes for nothing. Harley-Davidson has slipped the Milwaukee-Eight into its flagship, a 45° V-twin of 1868 cc (or 114 cubic inches for the purists from across the Atlantic) that replaces the Twin Cam with tangible arguments. Partial liquid cooling, four valves per cylinder, dual ignition, a balance shaft that smooths out most of the idle tremors — the engine has gained refinement while preserving the character that keeps fans of the Milwaukee manufacturer coming back.

On paper, 90 horsepower at 5020 rpm looks modest against a BMW K1600 GTL with its six cylinders, or even the flat-six of the Honda Gold Wing. The truth lies lower in the rev range. The 163.8 Nm of torque arrive at 3000 rpm, and that is precisely where the ship reveals its true nature. A fistful of throttle coming out of a corner and the mass heaves forward, driven by a wave of power that pins you to the backrest. Top speed tops out at 170 km/h, which remains anecdotal on a motorcycle built to devour kilometers at 130, not to chase stopwatch times. Six-speed gearbox, belt final drive, the combo does its job without drama.
The tubular steel double-cradle frame carries all this metal with the stability of an old sea dog. A 49 mm telescopic fork with 117 mm of travel up front, two lateral shock absorbers at the rear offering 76 mm of stroke, nothing revolutionary but everything calibrated to absorb barrels of battered asphalt. The low 740 mm seat lets smaller riders plant their feet effortlessly, a precious asset during stationary maneuvers when you remember you are hauling over four hundred kilos dry (399 to be exact). Braking duties fall to two 300 mm discs bitten by four-piston calipers at the front, an identical disc at the rear, all coupled to the Reflex system that manages distribution beyond 40 km/h.
The onboard equipment deserves a closer look. The Boom Box GTS with its 6.5-inch TFT screen compatible with Apple CarPlay, navigation, voice recognition, four-channel speakers — everything breathes the intent to offer the cockpit of an American sedan. The passenger is not forgotten, with a widened seat, a reworked backrest, adjusted armrests. The 22.7-liter tank guarantees comfortable range to link two stages stress-free. At 30,410 euros, the price tag remains steep, but the direct competition, Indian Roadmaster leading the pack, plays in the same court, sometimes even a notch above.

Who does this Ultra Limited really speak to? Not the track rider, not the urban commuter weaving between buses. Its audience is the committed long-distance traveler, the couple who wants to cruise at an easy pace for three weeks across Europe, the rider who prefers the sensation of a twin thumping at 3000 rpm over the surgical precision of a Japanese six-cylinder. The 114 is not the most agile, nor the most powerful, and even less the finest in its transitions. It offers something else, a coherent experience, a journey furnished with chrome and low-pitched bass notes, and that is exactly what its buyers come looking for on the order form.
