Overview

Can we really call it "Limited" when a motorcycle overflows with equipment to this extent? With the 2020 Road Glide Limited FLTRK, Harley-Davidson pushes the American grand touring slider into a zone where excess practically becomes standard. This heir to the Road Glide Ultra comes loaded with technology and a level of finish that justifies, or attempts to justify, a price tag of €29,690. The kind of machine that isn't aimed at the undecided or the budget-conscious, but at committed long-distance riders — those who devour back roads by the hundreds and want to do it in comfort bordering on a rolling living room.

Beneath the fixed shark-nose fairing, the Milwaukee-Eight 1868 cc delivers 89 hp at 5,020 rpm. Not enough to worry a Suzuki Hayabusa, granted. But the philosophy lies elsewhere. This 45° V-twin unleashes 163.8 Nm of torque from just 3,000 rpm, where a Honda Gold Wing Tour or a BMW R 1250 RT ask you to climb higher in the rev range to reach full thrust. The character is therefore radically different: you ride on the mid-range, with suppleness, the engine rumbling in the low registers without ever straining. The twin vibrates less than previous generations but retains that distinctly American sonic and mechanical signature. You don't mistake a Harley for a Japanese bike, even with your eyes closed.

On the chassis side, the steel double-cradle frame handles the 423 kg wet weight with disconcerting composure. The 49 mm telehydraulic fork and twin rear shocks absorb imperfections adequately, without claiming to rival the comfort of a Gold Wing with electronically controlled suspension. The 18-inch Slicer II wheels, fitted with 130/70 rubber up front and 180/55 at the rear, provide added stability over the previous 17 and 16-inch setup. Braking duties fall to 300 mm discs squeezed by four-piston calipers front and rear, and they get the job done — especially since cornering ABS keeps a watchful eye on things.

Because the real novelty of this model year is the electronic arsenal grouped under the acronym RDRS, for Reflex Defensive Rider Systems. Two-map traction control, lean-sensitive linked braking, engine drag torque slip control, tire pressure sensors, hill start assist: Milwaukee has brought itself up to speed with what BMW and KTM offer on their touring bikes. Add to that the Boom Box GTS infotainment system with its 6.5-inch TFT screen, GPS navigation, smartphone connectivity via the H-D Connect app, standard heated grips, and 132 liters of storage split between the saddlebags and the Tour Pak. H-D Connect lets you monitor your motorcycle remotely, from the fuel gauge to suspicious movement detection, for a monthly subscription after the first complimentary year. Gimmick or genuine asset? That depends on your level of paranoia.

Harley-Davidson 1870 Road Glide Limited FLTRK

The central question remains: who is this Road Glide Limited for? For the touring rider who prioritizes style and character over pure performance. Who accepts piloting a 423 kg ocean liner topped out at 170 km/h, because the pleasure lies between 100 and 130, cruise control engaged, intercom connected, the V-twin purring its generous torque. The Gold Wing Tour offers a smoother inline-six and a more agile chassis. The BMW Grand America, a more powerful engine. But neither will give you that raw presence, that aggressive snout split by Daymaker headlights, that road presence that turns heads at gas stations. The Harley Road Glide Limited cannot be measured in numbers alone. It is lived, shown off, owned without apology. And at this price, you'd better be convinced before you sign.
