Overview

Imagine a film noir chopper, the kind that pulls up in front of a bar unannounced, its belt drive heard ten seconds before it arrives. The 2018 Breakout plays exactly that role, but Harley had the good sense not to stop at staging. This redesign brings the Milwaukee-Eight in its 107 cubic inch variant — 1745cc of a 45-degree V-twin producing 86 horsepower at 5,020 rpm and, more importantly, 145 Nm of torque available from just 3,000 rpm. On a machine weighing 305 kg fully loaded, that low-end torque speaks louder than any power figure.

What surprises about this evolution is the scale of the overhaul. Milwaukee could have simply transplanted the new engine into the old chassis. They didn't. The Softail frame was redesigned from the ground up: half the number of parts, 22% fewer welds, 65% greater structural rigidity alone and 34% more with the fully assembled motorcycle. The net result: 17 kg shed compared to the previous generation. For a custom of this size, that's a radical transformation, not a simple facelift. The hardtail appearance at the rear is preserved, the illusion still holds, but behind the mask, the engineering is serious.

The suspension followed the same logic. The 49 mm dual-valve telescopic fork, carried over from the 2017 Touring models, replaces the old unit with a measurable gain in responsiveness. The rake angle and travel were recalculated to lighten the steering — no luxury on a machine fitted with a 130/60-21 front tire. At the rear, the single shock mounted beneath the seat features a preload adjustment knob accessible without tools. This isn't sport suspension; it's honest suspension on a custom that knows its priorities.

On the styling side, Harley worked the details with a consistency not always credited to them. Daymaker LED headlight, blacked-out mirrors, matching fork clamps, angled rear fender supports, split-spoke wheels, a digital instrument cluster replacing the old round analog gauge. The 13.2-liter tank has a revised profile, and the two exhaust pipes are now stacked rather than side by side. Each modification is small in isolation; together they reshape a silhouette that reads tighter, visually lower, more coherent in its radical custom statement.

Who is this Breakout aimed at, priced at €21,760? Not the novice, that's certain. The 665 mm seat height is manageable, but handling 305 kg at low speed demands experience. Not the track rider either: a top speed of 160 km/h is not what this machine is built for. The Breakout speaks to riders who already have a few engine sizes under their belt, who want a strong-character machine for cruising major highways or cutting through a city with an undeniable visual presence. Compared to an Indian Scout Bobber or a Triumph Bonneville Bobber, it plays in a different displacement and price category. Its direct competition is the other Milwaukee-Eight Softails, and within that family, the Breakout is the most extreme in its stylistic proposition. For those whom 107 cubic inches aren't enough, Harley offers the 114 ci engine as an option, pushing the torque even further. At that point, it's hard to find a reason to say no.
