Overview
Imagine a chopper straight out of a 1970s California garage, but with proper registration papers, a manufacturer's warranty, and a dealer network behind you. That's exactly the bet Milwaukee made in 2008 with the FXCW Rocker, and one must acknowledge that the attempt is far from insignificant.

Visually, the machine makes a sharp statement. The long, low silhouette, the rear fender dubbed the "Rockertail" that wraps around the 240/40-18 wheel like a hot rod body panel, the solo seat stretched flush with the frame: everything here is designed to turn heads before you even turn the key. Where other manufacturers offer tastefully smooth customs, Harley delivers a motorcycle that seems to have been drawn by someone who didn't know the meaning of compromise. And yet, beneath this rebel exterior beats the proven technical heart of the Softail family, with its rear shock absorbers hidden horizontally beneath the engine, steel double-cradle frame included. Hardtail aesthetics, Softail comfort.
The 1584 cc Twin Cam 96B handles propulsion duties. This air-cooled 45° V-twin develops 73 horsepower at 5,300 rpm, but it's above all its torque of 117 Nm available from 3,200 rpm that defines the character of the machine. Far from the figures of a sportbike, but on a motorcycle of this size, built to swallow miles in a straight line, this low rev range and generous torque are exactly what's called for. The six-speed gearbox with belt drive does the rest, silently and smoothly.
Getting acquainted takes some adjustment. The radical geometry, the very open rake angle, and the long wheelbase make direction changes more laborious than on a Softail Standard or a Fat Boy. Don't look here for the liveliness of a Triumph Bonneville America or the urban maneuverability of an Indian Scout. The Rocker is built for the open road, the straight line, eyes on the horizon. On the other hand, past 110 km/h, it displays exemplary stability and reassuringly neutral steering, up to its claimed top speed of 170 km/h. The seat height of 641 mm makes the machine accessible to a wide range of riders, which is no small bonus.
Two drawbacks deserve to be raised plainly. The 311 kg wet weight bears heavily in slow maneuvers and parking lot U-turns. And the two 292 mm discs, despite the four-piston front caliper, seem dimensioned with a certain frugality for a machine of this heft. Nothing alarming on open roads, but it makes itself felt under heavy braking. The minimalist instrument cluster, integrated into the 18.9-liter tank, displays the essentials without frills. Consistent with the model's philosophy, but don't expect more than mileage, trip meters, and a fuel gauge.
Priced at €19,395 at launch, the Rocker targets a specific audience: those who dream of big front wheel choppers but refuse to sacrifice reliability on the altar of style, or to spend thousands of additional euros at a custom shop. Compared to an Indian Chief Vintage or a Victory Vegas of the same era, it feels more handcrafted in spirit, more sharply defined in form. That's probably its greatest asset, and its only truly necessary argument.
