Overview
Can a sport motorcycle fade away and forget it’s Italian? With the Ducati Supersport 950 S, the answer is a resounding no. This machine, which we see in 2022 as well as 2024, doesn't seek to be a discreet ninja. It is the antithesis of the radical Panigale, a deliberate compromise for those who want the Desmo twin’s growl without the lower back pain of a racetrack. Its role is clear: to be a sport motorcycle dressed for grand touring, a road companion that knows how to show its teeth in a mountain pass.

Beneath its aggressive lines beats a well-known heart, the 937 cc L-twin. It delivers 110 horsepower, a power figure that seems almost sensible on paper compared to a turbocharged Japanese motorcycle. But don't be fooled, the magic lies in how they are delivered. Torque is present from the mid-range, pushing with that typical Ducati elasticity, making overtaking and acceleration on winding roads surprisingly fluid. 0 to 62 mph is dispatched without incident, but it’s between 4000 and 8000 rpm that this engine sings its best score. The advertised weight, 210 kg fully fueled, is felt when stationary, but once underway, the motorcycle unleashes with surprising agility for a GT.
The letter S in its designation is not a simple badge. It means Öhlins. A 48 mm inverted fork and a single shock absorber, both fully adjustable, replace the Marzocchi components of the standard version. The difference on the road is palpable: more precision, more feedback, and damping that absorbs imperfections without ever becoming soft. Coupled with Brembo braking and cornering ABS, this provides a confidence in curves that borders on that of a pure sport motorcycle. One can always quibble about the Akrapovic kit or multimedia pack not being standard, but the essentials are there. The trellis frame, a signature of the brand, offers rigidity that communicates every piece of information from the road.
So, who is the Ducati Supersport 950 S for? Certainly not the pure beginner, despite the availability of an A2 restriction kit. Its price, hovering around €16,000, places it in the big leagues. It targets the demanding globetrotter, the former track rider with a bad back, or the enthusiast who wants a unique machine, capable of devouring hundreds of kilometers one day and having fun on technical roads the next. Faced with a Yamaha Tracer 9 or an Aprilia RS 660, it plays the card of pure emotion and status.
Its flaw? Perhaps this feeling of never being quite the most performant in a very segmented category. But that’s also its strength. It doesn't need to be the fastest, it is the most charismatic. Consulting a technical specification sheet or a Ducati Supersport 950 S used listing will confirm its mechanical assets. But to understand its soul, you have to let this twin run at 6500 rpm in a tunnel. At that moment, no further questions arise about horsepower or price. It is an experience, a piece of Bologna rolling, and that is priceless.
