Overview
So, you dream of an Italian sportbike that would accept a bit of touring? In 2002, the Ducati ST4 916 was attempting just that bold gamble, and its test reveals a personality far more complex than a simple 916 dressed in civilian clothes. The concept seems clear: graft the beating heart of the mythical 916, this 916 cm3 desmoquattro, into a sporty touring frame. This yields 105 horsepower at 9000 rpm and a torque of 88.3 Nm, figures that snap in the wind. But here's the thing, the engine's temperament is anything but routine.

Forget the suppleness of a Japanese four-cylinder, like a Honda VFR for example. The ST4's L-twin remains a high-revving animal, eager for RPM. Below 5000 rpm, it coughs, lacks responsiveness, and insistently reminds you that it was born for the track. You have to wait until 7500 rpm for the torque to really unleash, and beyond 8000 rpm, the beast awakens in a mechanically exhilarating howl. For a track rider, it’s a delight. For a touring rider looking to devour miles in serenity, it’s a noisy and vibrating ordeal. This extreme character defines the overall opinion of the Ducati ST4 916: it’s a sportbike that tolerates luggage, not the other way around.
This schizophrenia is reflected in its behavior. The trellis frame inherited from the ST2, and the 43 mm inverted fork are designed for precision on smooth surfaces. On smooth roads, it plants like an arrow. But present it with weathered asphalt, and the suspension is firm, almost brutal, transmitting every bump. With a 82 cm seat height and an engaged riding position, long-term comfort is clearly sacrificed on the altar of sport. Even wind protection is minimal, completing the picture of a demanding machine.
So, who is it for? Certainly not the novice or the traveler seeking versatility. The 2000 ST4 916 is a passion object for the purist who wants the sound and soul of a 916, but with the theoretical possibility of fitting a top case. Its price at the time, 12,200 euros, made it an exclusive alternative to more refined Japanese sport-tourers. It’s a counter-current motorcycle, imperfect, sometimes frustrating, but with undeniable mechanical charm. It makes no compromises, and that may be its greatest strength… and its greatest weakness.
