Overview

When Ducati decides to play explorer, it doesn't resemble a Sunday outing on departmental roads. The Ducati Multistrada 1200 Enduro Pro of 2017 demonstrates that the Bolognese manufacturer can exceed its own borders, the ones it had itself drawn with the Multistrada Enduro. Here, we are no longer talking about a trail capable of traversing a forest path between mountain passes. We are talking about a machine designed to seek out dust where it only settles for those who truly desire it.

Ducati Multistrada 1200 Enduro Pro

The lineage with the sporty 1198 is assumed, almost claimed. The 1198 cm³ L-twin engine develops 152 horsepower at 9500 rpm and 127.5 Nm of torque at 7500 rpm. These figures, slightly lower than the 160 horsepower displayed on the other Multistradas, do not reflect a mechanical impoverishment but a recalibration linked to new measurement standards. In fact, the Pro has more than enough to reduce any terrain to a manageable portion. Faced with a KTM 1290 Super Adventure or a BMW R 1200 GS Adventure, the Ducati twin lacks neither character nor bite; it simply possesses a Latin temperament that Bavarian or Austrian engineers would not have known how to invent.

What distinguishes the Pro version from the standard Multistrada Enduro are equipment choices consistent with the displayed ambition. Spoked wheels receive Pirelli Scorpion Rally tires, frankly more comfortable on dirt and gravel than the Scorpion Trail tires of the base version. A tubular Touratech crash bar dresses the flanks and accommodates additional headlights. The screen is shorter to clear the view on track. The Termignoni titanium exhaust pipe announces the color from the moment it is started. The black finish on the engine casings emphasizes a workshop rather than a lounge aesthetic. The whole thing weighs 261 kg full, or seven kilos more than the standard version: a reasonable tribute for such a level of equipment, even if at this saddle height of 870 mm, short-statured riders will need to take precautions.

The onboard electronics are one of the strongest arguments of this machine. The semi-active Skyhook suspensions with generous 200 mm travel at both wheels adapt to the terrain in real time, which on rough terrain represents a real advantage over the competition. The four riding modes, the six-axis IMU, cornering ABS, traction control and anti-wheelie form a safety net of real effectiveness, without ever completely restricting sensations. The 5-inch TFT screen, Bluetooth, cruise control and 30-liter tank complete a dashboard worthy of a versatile touring bike as much as a serious adventurer.

At 23,390 euros, or about 2000 euros more than the classic Multistrada Enduro, the Pro is aimed at a very specific profile: the experienced rider who does not want to choose between a great journey and an off-bitumen escapade, who accepts the compromises inherent in a 261 kg machine on difficult terrain but who knows that the electronic benefits largely compensate for the weight on soft ground. It is not a pure enduro, and no one should be mistaken. It is a conquest tool with a sporty temperament, built for those who look at the map and prefer the lines that do not pass through roads.
