Overview
Ducati did it dare to go too far with this Multistrada’s futuristic insect-like look? In 2008, the question was still being asked, but the Bologna-based brand had an undeniable answer: increase the engine’s displacement. The arrival of this Ducati Multistrada 1100 2008 is the story of a milestone achieved, that of a liter-sized displacement for a production twin. We move from 992 to 1078 cm3, and the character of the beast is transformed.

Beneath this characteristic trellis frame, the air/oil-cooled V2 retains its proven architecture, with its two desmodromic valves. The bore is increased, and above all, an oil-bath clutch, borrowed from the ST3, is grafted on. Farewell to the typical mechanical clatter, hello to a smoother feel in everyday use. The objective is clear: more flexibility and progressiveness. Power gains 5 horsepower to reach 95 hp, but it is on the torque, boosted to 102.9 Nm, that the difference is felt. It arrives earlier, and it is much more present in the low and mid-range. This engine, often called 1100 DS in technical specifications, finally gives the Multi the pulling power it lacked to assume its touring side, without sacrificing its vibrant soul.
On the saddle, the philosophy remains the same: a straight and comfortable riding position, an 85 cm seat height that is accessible, and this agile chassis that makes you forget the 221 kg when fully fueled. The Marzocchi and Sachs adjustable suspensions do their job well, and the brakes, although not monoblocs, offer good bite. For those seeking high-end features, the Ducati Multistrada 1100 S with its Öhlins was the option of choice, a frequently sought-after opportunity today. The S version brought this extra refinement and handling for the most demanding riders.
So, who is this Italian made for? For the sporty touring rider who wants character without the extreme compromises of a pure sportbike. It devours the kilometers with newfound assurance, thanks to its 20-liter tank and now more flexible engine. Faced with a BMW R1200GS of the time, more versatile and comfortable, Ducati plays the card of engagement and sensation. It is less tame, more tactile, and that comes at the cost of small vibrations despite the engine mounts. In terms of reliability, the Ducati Multistrada 1100 DS reliability is reputedly quite good for an Italian motorcycle of this generation, especially with proper maintenance.
Finding a Ducati Multistrada 1100 used today is like uncovering a motorcycle at a crossroads. It marks the end of an era, that of simple and mechanical Ducatis, before the invasion of electronics. Its raw power, polarizing design, and now muscular engine make it a pivotal model, much more interesting and capable than the original 1000. A Ducati Multistrada 1100 test ride will convince you that it has not aged in terms of driving pleasure, even if some finishes betray its age. It was the premise of a revolution, and you can feel it.
